A coat was a form of clothing worn on the upper body, much like a jacket, but was more substantial in length.

The Seventh Doctor spent his first hours in the Sixth Doctor's patchwork frock coat before switching for a silver grey safari jacket. (TV: Time and the Rani) He wore a dark tan duffle coat as protection from the rain; (TV: The Curse of Fenric; PROSE: Untitled, The Highest Science) and also a black leather trenchcoat on Nazi Germany. The Thirteenth Doctor spent her first hours in the Twelfth Doctor's ebony linen frock coat before switching for a hooded, periwinkle trench coat with a dark blue interim and a rainbow pattern across the edges of it. (TV: The Woman Who Fell to Earth) While in 1955 Montgomery, Alabama, she intentionally tore her coat. She and Yasmin Khan gave the coat to seamstress Rosa Parks to repair to ensure she would leave work on time on the day of her historic arrest.
