Re: The Daft Dimension

A pleasure to see a new user going into such details and minutiae of dabbing policy! It's worth noting that the Daft Dimension naming scheme is identical to the one used for the Quinn & Howett Doctor Who? stories, which is massive enough that even if it isn't currently recorded in policy, the way of translating "Doctor Who? (DWM 103 comic story)" into a "(Doctor Who? 103)" dab term can, by now, be considered "current policy" in th T:BOUND sense of the term.

Beyond that, I'm sure people like User:Borisashton will have an opinion on this issue, so you'd best copy over the text of your message to Talk:The Daft Dimension so that more people can participate. I think the current way is fine, personally — IIRC Doctor Who? strips aren't numbered, although I'm not sure if Daft Dimension ones are, so it's easier for readers wanting to track down the story to have the number of the issue, rather than the number of the story itself within the series, since that number is not present anywhere in the actual stories. Scrooge MacDuck 20:18, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for the speedy response. As I mentioned, I am new here and so I'm not sure if I'm supposed to reply here or on your talk page. I hadn't even thought to put this on Talk: The Daft Dimension so I will do that right away. them you. Bongo50 (aka Bongolium500) 20:38, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Hm, yeah, usually one should reply on the talk page of the other fellow. Quite alright not to have figured this out on the first try, though, don't worry!Scrooge MacDuck 20:57, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

T:VS elucidation

Hi! Just spotted User:Bongolium500/Sandbox 3. There are a few points on which you say you are unsure, so let me clarify:

 • A work which passes Rules 2 and 3 (commercially licensed by a DWU copyright-holder, and officially released), but fails Rule 1 (being a story) and Rule 4 (being meant to be set in the DWU), would be covered-as-invalid. A non-narrative parody gamebook, for example. The Universe Marathon may count: it's licensed and released, but it's a parody and has a branching narrative, so it's invalid.
 • A work with passes Rules 2 (licensed) and 4 (meant to be set in the DWU), but fails Rule 1 (being a story) and Rule 3 (having been officially released)… Or a work which passes Rule 2 (licensed) but fails the other three little rules… That depends on what you mean by "failing Rule 3". Obviously T:SPOIL applies to these things, as it does to everything. But if we had information about a cancelled licensed, non-narrative Doctor Who work, then I think we would have an unprod page on that work. I don't know that the case has ever come up, but in theory we could.

Also, although that would in theory be a valid grounding on which to rule it out IMO, Can I Help You? is not currently deemed to be invalid on Rule 1 grounds; after all, we do dab it as a "(short story)" still. Rather, it is provisionally invalid for reasons similar to the Dalek Wars short stories — it's suspected that being too tied in with a "merchandise tie-in" makes it fail Rule 4 for similar reasons to commercials. It was due for a proper inclusion debate when the UCP mishap happened. Scrooge MacDuck 19:27, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Daft Dimension numbering

Please do not change the citations in the (COMIC: The Daft Dimension 477) format. This is used on hundreds of pages, potentially thousands, across the Wiki to efficiently cite individual installments of Doctor Who? and The Daft Dimension, and even if I agreed that these citations aren't really proper, T:BOUND would apply for such a wide-ranging change. Really, this goes hand in hand with the dabbing issue we discussed two months ago (see above). Scrooge MacDuck 10:50, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Comments on your Sandboxes

I just wanted to say that your citation template proposal is easily the coolest and most impactful idea I've ever seen proposed on the wiki. I understand it will take significant effort and reformatting to get it working with Template:Infobox Story etc, but I commit myself to doing what I can to facilitate its implementation, if/when it's approved. In the meantime I look forward to watching more of your brainstorming on this topic! – n8 () 16:13, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Template

Yes, certainly, if you need it to continue your excellent work on new templates. But, of course, don't start using it on pages in the main namespace unless it's been approved and renamed to something less "placeholder"y. Thank you for asking first, anyway! Scrooge MacDuck 18:05, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Connection tree

Hi Bongolium,

I think that your sandbox showing how various series connect is really impressive. I have a suggestion for the Periodic Adventures of Señor 105 section, I think that it would be better to swap out the "Excelis Saga" for the Main Range and then have that part connect to Iris and then The Brenda and Effie Mysteries (series) underneath (as Iris appeared in several Main Range releases and Brenda appeared in The Boy That Time Forgot (audio story)).

Just a suggestion, but I think that you're doing great and I can't wait to see more. RadMatter 11:27, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the encouragement! I have made a small tree at User:RadMatter/Sandbox 1 using your original template to show how most of Paul Magrs/George Mann's series interact. RadMatter 23:07, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
I have again expanded my own tree, with help from your own.
It would be good if we were able to somehow incorporate the Virgin New Adventures, as they spun off into both the Bernice Summerfield (series) (which contained a part of the Excelis Saga) and Cwej: The Series (which featured an appearance by Iris in Down the Middle). RadMatter 11:47, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Which of the placements on my tree do you disagree with, if you don't mind saying? RadMatter 15:39, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Ah! I didn't realise that the lines had meaning, I've just seen your key. RadMatter 15:58, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Tree limitations

Bongo, you might be interested in some work I've done at User:NateBumber/Sandbox2 based on your character family trees – I think I've found a pretty good way to represent the ambiguity of Orson Pink's relationship with Danny and Clara, as well as the Doctor's multiple possible parentages – although I've leaned into speculation and invalid sources for that one! Thanks for revitalizing this template, I think we could do really cool things with it. – n8 () 13:11, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words! I've just reorganized the page to more clearly present my two different ideas and their pros and cons. To summarize, one is more rigid and requires extra tiles, and the other is more flexible but would require resurrecting the old-style "VNA: Lungbarrow" prefixes, which were abandoned for a reason.
I've given some thought to mobile users, who (despite T:DESK WINS) make up a majority of wiki readers. But I don't think it's an insurmountable obstacle, as long as each tree is just an alternate way of rendering information already available on the page, so mobile readers aren't actually be missing out on any core info. Thinking ahead … well, you know more about templates than I do: would it be possible to modify so it doesn't even try to render the tree in mobile view, or so it adds an indicator that the page should be viewed on desktop? From my naive perspective, this seems more achievable than actually making tree work for mobile. – n8 () 16:41, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
I definitely hear what you're saying regarding the different versions: a degree of flexibility is definitely necessary, and multiple formats can and should exist and interact, differentiated by their accompanying keys. The fact that even ""serious"" fans don't know the title of every story in each series is definitely why I started using prefixes in the first place (series-less stories just wouldn't get them I guess). I am an remain a superfan of your citation template idea, so incorporating it here seems like it would be a perfect fit.
And wow, you found out how to add shapes very quickly! :) Is it possible to The concept in my charts is that dotted lines can be merged / absorbed into filled lines sometimes, so I think the missing squares in my charts rely on a horizontal dashed line being able to turn solid when it meets a vertical solid line. Is that remotely possible? – n8 () 19:54, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
Yes, those are perfect! If I may, I'd also suggest ones where the vertical line stops halfway / doesn't continue through to the bottom. I'd do it myself but ... I have no idea how you're doing it! – n8 () 14:10, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
Those are perfect, and as you can see in my newly-updated Sandbox2, they make my "Proposal 1" work effectively. Thank you again! – n8 () 13:04, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification! I've removed my links to your tree sandbox. I also saw that you mentioned at User:Najawin/Sandbox 5 that you'd like a forum debate about using tree on more pages. Do you really think the forums would be necessary for that change? I don't think there was ever a debate about using <gallery> on story pages; someone just started doing it, and it works great. Maybe getting a thumbs up from an admin would be nice, but as I see it, there isn't anything stopping us from just going ahead and sticking them on pages. – n8 () 16:57, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Some of your recent changes and proposals

Hey there! I see you've been pretty busy around here, and we all thank you for your creativity. Coupla pooints, though. We've been striving around here for years to make the CSS increasinlyh simplified. Your recent effortts in Fandomdesktop.css and .js have therefore been deleted. This created a massively confusing situation whereby the less technically-minded amongst our admin staff wouldn't have been able to easily locate many things that should have been easily presented by the Theme Designer. A good example: the background banner. This should only be inserted via ThemeDesigner, and never by CSS. I appreciate that you might have picked up some bad advice about this, and that you meant no harm, but all backgrounds must be applied by TD only.

Additionally, Fandomdesktop.css, despite its name, is best used for helping historical Gamepedia wikis better align with Fandom ones, since those wikis have long had user-manipulatable css and js that works for the mobile skin, and so those wikis can have different styling.

Obviously, it's possible to use Fandomdesktop on a historically Fandom wiki, but we shouldn't be doing that here. See, what happens is that this would split the CSS tree by having two style sheets at the same load level. That immediately doubles the complexity of the code. And if you start putting the same code on both style sheets, then page load times could be impacted -- much less the fact that you then have a harder time finding the declaration you want to change.

So the idea for the basic structure of the pages is to have everything that could impact every single page of the wiki in MediaWiki:Common.css, and then to have several specific sub style pages linking off from that, such as MediaWiki:Infoboxes.css.

Finally, I do wanna stop you on your development path to the automated User:Bongolium500/Sandbox 5. Over the years we've made several such stabs at this, and this thing you've called merely an "issue" is non-trivial:

According to MediaWiki's website, this can be confusing for users using a screen reader. Every collapsible is open for a short amount of time while the page loads before closing which, on a larger page using this a lot, would cause the page to jump a lot.

We've taken a pretty firm stance here over the years to keep the site as broadly usable as possible, and we fear that this would create chaos on longer pages for people who rely on a screenreader. So we can't do this.

Additionally there's a potentially Fandom-wide issue with this:

For this to work at all, a lot of prior work needs to be done with Semantic MediaWiki annotations. By far the best solution (in terms of future-proofing and best practises) is to update Infobox Story.

Fandom's version of SMW is no longer available to wikis that don't have it enabled -- and for good cause. Calc-intensive operations like this have an impact across the network, so we really can't do this. This is a minor burden -- typing out the abbreviations for media types -- and we've been doing it fine for years. It's really not worth the expense or load on the whole of SMW across the network.

And finally, we won't be using tooltips around here. While other older wikis, typically covering games, have widespread use of toolips, they aren't trying to install them in 2021 where mobile usage is wwwwaaayyyy higher than it was back in the day. So when you note, correctly, that [tooltips do] not work at all on mobile" -- you're really saying we can't use them at all.

Thanks again for all your work. I hope this doesn't discourage you from contributing other ideas. And I'm really sorry I was out on extended medical leave over the whole summer so that I could have saved you some time.

Re: Template test

It would be best if you kept an inuse tag on the pages while you're testing the template on them, until it is certain that what you're trying out does work with no unforeseen side-effects. But with that caveat, unless another admin with more coding knowledge than I has an objection, go ahead! Thank you for asking first. Scrooge MacDuck 19:55, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

Hm, yes, I think that would do it! Scrooge MacDuck 21:00, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Why not! Scrooge MacDuck 19:53, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
Alright! Scrooge MacDuck 11:43, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Yes, if you're sure they won't cause issues. Scrooge MacDuck 15:50, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

User questions

Hi please note that, while you can always answer user questions, please do not present yourself as an experienced editor to whom other users can come for questions. First, you've been here less than a year, and we do have a lot of more experienced editors. Second, it's always better to direct new or inexperienced users to the admins who are more familiar with policy than most of the other users. Thanks Shambala108 02:59, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Infobox inquiry

Hey there Bongo, hope you're doing well! I'm again trying to learn how templates work and again running into problems before I even begin, so I figured I'd check if it would only take you three minutes and I could avoid the trouble. The idea should be pretty simple: a sandbox version of Infobox Individual with "prev" and "next" variables so that, for instance, the Fourth Doctor infobox links to Third Doctor and Fifth Doctor. Feel free to tell me to buzz off, but is this the sort of quick project you'd be willing to tackle? – n8 () 17:09, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

Phenomenal: thank you for the speedy assistance! It looks perfect. And I'm doing well, thank you for asking :) – n8 () 14:25, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

Terraqueous Distributor annuals

Hi Bomgolium500,

My name is Mark and I am the editor of the Terraqueous Distributor annuals. Please forgive me not being able to find this function sooner, I have aspergers, so some thinga take me a little longer to work out.

Anyway on the subject if the Dr Who annuals, Terraqueous have become very popular and have featured in magazines such as the official Doctor Who magazine, Starburst, and next months Celestial Toyroom magazine published by DWAS.

We also have official elements in our annuals, the 1997 annual has Stacy And Ssard as the resident companions from the 1996 Radio Times strips.

WTHe 1987 annual officailly featured Sil, 1989 officially featured Mags.

On one communication you mentioned "At the most, it should probably just receive a small note at the bottom of the page."

So as it was onnly a small piece of tect, the last I placed it at the bottom.

Would this be ok, can we come to some kind of compromise.

If you would like to talk further my email is: [email protected]

kind regards Mark :-)

Hi. Have you seen my reply on your talk page? Generally, editors reply to talk page messages on the other person's talk page. Bongo50 (aka Bongolium500) 20:20, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

have i upset you

Hi Bomgolium500,

If I have upset you, it was not my intention and I am sorry.

MArk :)

Hi Mark. You have not upset me at all! If I'm being completely honest, I would quite like the Terraqueous Distributor annuals to be covered here. However, that can only happen if they fall within policy. Generally, people respond to talk page messages on the other person's talk page. However, I feel that you will have a better chance of seeing this message if I place it here. I saw that you provided your email but it is generally better to keep discussions like this on-wiki so that they can be cited in future discussions if needed. It is absolutely vital that you do not remove any of your previous talk page messages. This is why Shambala108 has reverted quite a number of your edits. Please just add any new messages below the original, ideally indented once from the previous message (like this one is). Both me and Scrooge MacDuck left a reply to your original message on your talk page. Have you seen these messages? If not, here is a summary:
 • As per Tardis:Don't wikify your own material, if you are the editor of these annuals, you shouldn't have added information about them to the wiki.
 • Similarly, we are unable to take your word that the annuals contain licensed elements. Do you have some form of external confirmation that you could provide? A Tweet (or similar) from the license holders would probably suffice (I think).
 • Do the licensed elements appear in stories with unlicensed elements? If there are stories featuring only licensed characters and we are able to verify that, those stories would probably be worthy of full coverage.
 • Which issue(s) of Doctor Who Magazine have the annuals been featured in?
When you're able, please leave your response under this message, indented twice. Again, I would like to reiterate that I you have not upset me in the slightest. While you have made a few mistakes, these are completely understandable for a new editor to make. Bongo50 (aka Bongolium500) 18:10, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Continuity

Relevant standards are hardly well formalised, so I don't presently feel a compulsion to hash out better guidelines on any particular talk page, never mind make the undertaking necessary to see such made concrete; all the same, asserting your lack of clarity as justification for an intervention and ensuring your finality before "suggesting" a dialogue is a desperately poor definition of good faith policy enforcement. If you are interested in exploring the relevant aporiae, you are welcome to initiate discussion. 106.68.45.20talk to me 02:43, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

I'm going to be completely honest and state that I do not understand your reasoning for removing the point. Tardis:Format for audio stories#Continuity states that continuity is "tie-ins between this audio story and other stories". The way I see it, that is exactly what the contested point is: it is Big Finish tying one of their stories into another by way of a minor reference. I do not see what chronology has to do with it. Bongo50 16:46, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Crew template for BBC Wales behind-the-scenes programmes

Hi Bongolium500, over the past two-ish years I've been adding the crew to all the episodes of Doctor Who Confidential, Totally Doctor Who, Torchwood Declassified, & Doctor Who Greatest Moments.

I was thinking that really, they should all have a crew template like all the other Wales-era shows, perhaps calling it something like WalesBTS. However I'm not well versed in SMW stuff and wouldn't know where to start making one.

Would it be possible for you to give me some pointers?

Thanks Doc77can 21:22, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Cool, thanks for the reply. I've got a list of all the credited roles already, I put it paste it here if you like. I'll need to double check a few though.

Sorry for the late reply, the answer to your question is no, not really; as the format of the credits differs between episodes (let alone series), especially on episodes where a crew member is credited for multiple roles. There's not really distinct groups the credits could be put into like the on the wales crew. My thinking for the template format was for a simple bullet point list but with the SMW properties, I don't know if you were thinking on similar lines.
Doc77can 23:20, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi, sorry for not replying straight away; first I just wanna say that the template looks great and thanks for putting in all that hard work. Looking at it on the example pages you've done, the issues I've noticed are:
 • I think it needs a wales crew-style top section for the "heavy hitters", seeing the Execs/Producers/Directors listed with the General production staff just looks odd.
 • The variables "Sound" and "Location Sound" should re-direct to Sound recordist.
 • The variable "Location Cameras" should re-direct to Camera operator.
Doc77can 13:35, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi, Bongo50, I haven't been online for a bit, so I've only just got your message. First of all, congrats on your work with Template:BTS crew ‎& Module:Crew, all that SMW stuff goes way over my head. Secondly looking at it on the test pages, it looks great. The only minor errors I can see are -
 • The variable "Camera" should be used for both single & plural situations.
 • The variable "Artist Contracts" should be in the "General production staff" column not the "Art department" column; as the Artist part refers to the interviewees - actors, directors, producer etc.
 • The variable "Assistant Producer" needs the plural "Assistant Producers".
 • The variable "Series Producer" should be in the top "heavy hitters" section; as its a senior position to a Producer; see Marcus Wilson's credit on TV: Closing Time (TV story)#Crew.
And again, thank you for all your hard work.
Doc77can 15:00, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Blimey, its been nearly a year, I've only just started using the template on more CON pages. But for some reason not all the credits are visible on the finished page. I've noticed that the credits for Sound and Titles don't show. Can you help with this??
Cheers. Doc77can 15:25, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
I've now added BTS crew to every CON episode up to S6Ep2. I noted the following issues -
 • |SeniorProduce= should be |SeniorProducer= and moved to "heavy hitters" section.
 • A credit |WithThanksTo= needs to be added.
 • |SpaceImages= should move to the Special and visual effects section.
 • How do I get the |EleventhDoctor= credit to show?
 • The "heavy hitters" section on CON: Do You Remember the First Time? displays oddly/weird layout bugs.
 • Plus general layout bugs/display issues - lots of seemingly random gaps between lines/sections. Is it possible for the bounding boxes to grow/shrink with the content?; at present they seem to be the same size regardless of content.
That's all I can think of, for now. Thanks as always. Doc77can 22:58, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Oh, another one -
 • In the Camera and lighting department section, |UnderwaterCameraOperator= should be above |UnderwaterCameraAssistant=.
 • Plus, how do I use the |BBCWales= credit exactly? Doc77can 02:34, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Oh dear, |SeniorProducer= is now causing layout bugs in the "heavy hitters" section on Series 6 CON episodes now. Doc77can 20:34, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
|ExecutuveProducerForDrWho2=Julie Gardner isn't displaying on the TDW episodes. Doc77can 22:37, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Still on the TDW episodes - the |Animation= credit is missing & |AnimationCast= credit is all lower case. Doc77can 01:53, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
 • On Torchwood Declassified episodes the credit |DVDirector= displays as Dv Director instead of DV Director.
 • The |BBCWales=/CBBC= credit should be above the |CopyrightYear= credit. Or maybe have all the <!--Bottom section--> credits on the same line.
 • Also can you add a |URL= credit here as well, above the |BBCWales=/CBBC= credit.
 • Actually, whilst I'm here can you also add |runtime2= & |runtime3= to Infobox Doc.
Thanks. Doc77can 15:00, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
 • The |SeniorProducer= is again causing layout bugs in the "heavy hitters" section on Series 2 Torchwood Declassified episodes.

Move

Hey, you're right. I was just about to undo my edit. For some reason I cannot move the page myself (although I can move a lot of other pages?) so thought it might have had something to do with the redirect. I removed the redirect but still couldn't move the page. DrWHOCorrieFan 16:53, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I believe the rule about non-admins moving pages has been postponed for the time being due to lack of forums. See; User:NateBumber's comment on User:Jack "BtR" Saxon's talkpage. DrWHOCorrieFan 17:10, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Other people's user pages

Hi, while I appreciate that your intention was good, it is against our vandalism policy for users to edit other users' pages, whether sandbox or other. If you see something that needs to be changed on someone's page, please ask an admin thanks. Shambala108 17:35, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

Counterparts template

Hi. You may have noticed some counterpart templates popping up on pages (such as London and Amy Pond) over the last few months. These display parallel or alternate counterparts of individuals, places, organisations, and in a few cases, species. There are currently a number of individual templates for each character/place etc. but I'm looking at creating a general-purpose template which can be used across all pages to save both time and space in the long run. I was pointed your way by User:NateBumber as apparently you're quite good with template coding. I'm thinking something broadly similar to Template:Looks like which can be used across multiple pages, but which can contain the information found on current counterpart templates, such as Template:London counterparts and Template:Rose Tyler counterparts etc. Let me know if this is something you would be able to help with. Thanks. 66 Seconds 14:58, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

That would be great, thanks. We're thinking of just calling it Template:Counterparts. The current ones say "parallel counterparts of [subject]", but it would probably be better if the general one was headed "alternate counterparts of [subject]" - that way it's suitable for both alternate timelines and parallel universes. Basically, just have a go at it and see what you can create. Any questions give me a shout. 66 Seconds 07:43, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks so much for doing the template! Great work and very fast! I wouldn't have known where to start with that one. I'll start replacing the old templates with the new design. 66 Seconds 22:52, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
I've just tested it on both the Twelfth Doctor and Twelfth Doctor (Shadow World) pages, but there seems to be an issue with it. The display name and the syntax 1/d1 appear to work, but appears to mess up the infobox above in preview mode and glitches when I try to save. Further syntaxes (2/d2, 3/d3 etc.) don't show up, so I'm left with just "Alternate counterparts of Twelfth Doctor: The Doctor's universe" and unable to add anything further. I also tried the premade example on Template:Counterparts, but that seems to have the same issue. Hope that makes sense. Wondering if you have any ideas or can take a look? Thanks! 66 Seconds 23:39, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I've switched to the 2010 editor and it's working now. Just updated Rose Tyler with the new template. I'll continue updating the others. Thanks again for all your help with the new template! 66 Seconds 07:51, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

SMW

I'm loving your SMW Guide, Help:Semantic MediaWiki is now non-existent and the actual website has a somewhat steep learning curve. I'm curious, can I add SMW tags that end users can't see? For instance, if I wanted to say that Cobweb and Ivory had a tag TheEnemy::Cernunnos that I could query later, distinct from the infobox Enemy field.

Also, you might not be aware, but Eragon has a few Doctor Who references as well, and obviously Transformers robots in disguise has the largest fictional universe. :> Najawin 08:49, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Quite a few! The most obvious is Angela knitting a hat that says "Raxacori-", but there's a whole page on the Eragon wiki. You've seen our Cultural references to the Doctor Who universe pages, I assume? (And it absolutely does not have a film adaptation. Never happened.) Najawin 18:28, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

SMW user rights

Hey, so, I dunno if this will work/be useful for you, but I noticed in Special:ListGroupRights there are a bunch of SMW roles that exist that only User:CzechOut actually has access to. I don't know if anyone's ever applied for them, and I don't know if they'll be helpful for you. But I was looking at the different rights (b/c I saw Tangerine did an edit on his user page and then went to his page and was curious about the difference between admin and bureaucrat, but w/e) and thought of you. 🥳 New template 🎉

Hey there, I'm trying to build a new template and was wondering if you'd kindly take a look! Right now I'm calling it NCmaterial, and its functionality is … very cobbled together. Here's how it would work in a dream world:

 1. It detects if it's on a subpage, and if it is, it modifies the output by (a) adding an extra sentence and (b) linking to the base page instead of the current page (ie Ace instead of Ace/Invalid sources). I believe I have the barest framework for this set up already; thanks to your lovely da, it might actually be fully implemented? Not sure.
 2. The default variable is a wiki-formatted list of sources. So someone can write "Death Comes to Time" or they can write "Combat Colin, Thundercats, and The Real Ghostbusters", and it'll render properly.
 3. Less importantly, it should allow manual override of the "name" variable, so you can use |name= to link to a totally different page. Don't really have a use case for this in mind, but I feel like it would be good to have.
 4. Most importantly, when people hit "edit" on the templatep age, it's gotta be cool black-and-white code-text, like when you hit "Edit" on Counterparts. I'd like this for feeling like a cool hacker syntax higlighting purposes.

Any bump you can give NCmaterial in the direction of that ideal, or any pointers you can give me for where I can learn to do it myself, would be hugely appreciated. If it ever gets annoying being the resident code wizard, btw, please feel free to point me to whatever documentation/etc you used to learn, and I'll do my best on my own. I feel a little twinge of guilt every time I hit you with a help request like this, since it seems I get so few opportunities to help you out in return! – n8 () 21:49, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the help and the detailed explanation! Your explanation of how fields are called is particularly appreciated, as is the "magic words" page; I'll get over my crushing disappointment about the code editor :")
Regarding #2, I was thinking the editor should provide a simple pre-linked/formatted list, since it will vary whether they want links to pages on Tardis, links to Wikipedia or other wikis, or no links at all. There's a sample implementation on T:SUBPAGE: . To test my understanding of what you wrote, I tried implementing a call to {}, but I can't quite figure out how to format it nicely in the context of the sentence: is something like {} possible?
That aside, I think it's looking pretty good – with the exception of the fact that the message is outgrowing the bounds of the input box by a fair bit! – n8 () 14:10, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
What a simple and elegant fix! Thank you, and thank you for taking a look tomorrow or whenever you get around to it :) – n8 () 18:20, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Weird wiki list comprehension thing

Hey, I remembered this old discussions post from a while ago and was wondering if you knew of a way to make the project being discussed feasible. (Though we'd have to have a thread about it still.) I don't know anywhere near enough about wiki backend to know if the process can be easily automated and figured you might. My guess is that SMW is probably strong enough, but there might be some nuances to the issue that would make it a headache. Hence the question. Najawin 07:38, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Welcome to being an admin! Following your nomination on the Tardis:User rights nominations page and a rather long wait for someone to action this (apologies for that, while I might not edit as frequently as I once did, I try to pop in and 'check my messages'). Feedback page

Hi Bongo! Would you give me permission to edit User:Bongolium500/cite source/reader feedback a bit? I'd love to share it on my socials, but there are a few tweaks I'd like to make first. In particular, I'm hoping we can show the examples in a way that would also show how it moves text around the page, since if that's too disruptive, that would be the main existential threat to this format IMO. I thought about just doing it in my own userspace, but I thought it would be best to keep things consolidated. No hard feelings if you think my edits are rubbish and decide to revert them, of course; and I won't touch "My aims and reasoning", since those are your aims and your reasoning :) Let me know! – n8 () 17:08, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

"The wide and varied DWU"

Hey Bongo, I've recently noticed that, frankly, epic image on your main profile that links the DWU to all those other universes; I love this kind of stuff because I love the whole concept of fictional multiverses. What I want to know if you have any kind of documentation that details exactly how all of these universes are connected. Don't worry it you don't: writing up such a thing would be a gigantic ask, but if you happen to have one knocking around… WaltK 17:26, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

Vandalism + Lock page

Hey, AUDIO keeps being vandalized, and it's supposed to be locked. (Not sure why it's not, but it's supposed to be.) The IP address doing this should be blocked as well, the person has been doing similar stuff to other articles over the span of months and we have to keep reverting the changes and asking admins to protect pages as a result. Cheers. Najawin 09:12, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

For some reason DWAN is also unprotected. I'm not sure how those two particular prefix pages became unlocked. But they seem to be the only ones. Najawin 12:01, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Epsilon

Hi, Bongolium. I'm messaging you because you're the most recently active admin and wonder if you could help. User:Epsilon the Eternal keeps reverting File:Rafe Wallbank.jpg because he disagrees with current policy and has accused me of acting only to prove a point (when I have no point to prove, having no issue with current policy) and made a number of unkind, presumptive and arguable ableist remarks including:

 • "Learn photography composition plz"
 • "and do you have eyes? Why do you like weird ass croppings that look like the contents of an early 2000s fangirl website for David Tennant?"
 • "You're doing malicious compliance, which part of the spirit of T:POINT even if it isn't specified"
 • "You care more about complying with the policy than actually caring about what the policy is supposed to be instructing us upon."
 • "I didn't know you're blind. My condolences."
 • "here's the number for the NHS to speak to about your blindness: 0300 311 22 33"
 • "Please, your blindness is getting really bad"
 • "A square image doesn't break any policies, but then, you wouldn't know that as you're blind"

I have attempted to engage him in conversation on his talk page, but he seems to prefer to communicate via edit summaries. I'd consider his edits to be in violation of T:ICC and T:BOUND but, more importantly, in breach of assuming good faith and T:NPA. - Jack "BtR" Saxon 14:25, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

I must express my own outrage that only one user got in trouble for this. While I am aware that Epsilon went further and delved into personal attacks, it was a case of pure edit warring on both sides (with Jack Saxon reverting up to 14 times!) so to see one party not even be warned about their involvement (unless I am missing something) is extremely frustrating. It appears some users get away with far greater than others. DrWHOCorrieFan 22:17, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Ah, I see. That's ridiculous and should be changed in my opinion. Allowing those types of edit wars can just lead to extremely petty instances like this one which only causes disruption. DrWHOCorrieFan 22:29, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi, Bongolium. I understand that there are set periods for users to be blocked, but I wonder if you have any leeway. As the subject of Epsilon's personal attacks, I'd like to ask for clemency and if his block might be shortened, but I understand if that's not possible. Jack "BtR" Saxon 16:19, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Re:Custom namespace

Ahhh, just saw this.

That's not the issue. The issue is I was trying to figure out if there was a way to have a set of users with perms that could edit the namespace aside from the admins, and from what I can tell it would require active monitoring at the FANDOM level, unless we attached those perms to an already existing role and handed that out. But that would then require us to choose a role to give to these users, which opens up a different can of worms. Najawin 05:19, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Maybe we could ask FANDOM to add it to "Editors (Semantic MediaWiki)", since that role seems to be effectively harmless and used by nobody, but I'm not sure who can grant that role. Nobody has it, not even Czech. Special:ListGroupRights is primarily FANDOM wide, but there are at least three that this wiki can use that we just refuse to use. The problem is that they all grant perms that we might not want to give to people. The SMW ones are probably harmless to the vast majority of people, but I'm not sure if they can be granted at the wiki level. Najawin 09:57, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

WikiChron

Dear lord, the tool just is close to collapsing under the weight now, isn't it? I've been sitting here for like 20 minutes and it's just a slog. I hope to see some interesting stuff, so thank you for that! But I almost feel bad for the owners of the project, they clearly didn't expect for a wiki as big as ours to be added. Najawin 22:44, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Alright, working now. Hmmmm. Interesting stuff to play with. Currently going through what we might call the "middle period" of the wiki based on current history, and it's very Iron Law-y, though early on much less so. Najawin 23:10, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
Hmmm. Did you try to get around the bug that was mentioned in the documentation? Because I think the data is only like 6% of our actual wiki. Still interesting to analyze! (And absolutely no criticism here!) I was just really confused by some of the numbers it was giving me. Najawin 04:01, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
Good luck! The poor website. Even the 1gb version was interesting though! If anyone besides the three of us are interested it might be worth contacting the site manager. He's still been publishing papers on the subject, so he might be interested in going deep rather than wide, if we let him play around with our data or even change our policies for studies. But we'd have to get a lot of buy in from other users. Najawin 08:04, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Dr. Who? Question help

Hey, sorry to bother you. I have a topic suggestion in in T:TF about an old infamous deleted page of ours, The "Doctor Who?" running joke. The topic is about seeking to have the page restored.

I might write an OP soon, but I have a problem as I can't access the content of the page. So I was hoping an admin could "Restore" the contents over to User:OttselSpy25/SANDBOX Dr. Who? joke. Thanks! OS25🤙☎️ 23:03, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

Bot

Have you glanced at User talk:Sulfur? It has a lot of conversation between Czech and Sulfur about setting up the original bot for this wiki. Not sure how outdated it is. Najawin 21:40, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

That's probably a better place to go. I unfortunately I don't know the process for a bot creation, beyond that if you want it to be able to do admin-level things that'll need to be applied to it.
Also SOTO also has the User:SV7 bot, they may also be able to assist in your bot creation. --Tangerineduel / talk 14:58, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
No, there isn't any procedure. Create the account, and then point me towards it, I'll implement the changes you need. --Tangerineduel / talk 14:28, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
Just went to change yours and your bot's user rights and realised I was mistaken above regarding the user rights management / bot creation, so I'd like to apologise on that front. I checked back through the history of user rights for bots and I indeed made an error, the higher ups need to make the bot change and did so for CzechOut and SOTO's bots. And then I'd need to change it to admin.
It seems to create bots, and I also expect adding you as an administrator for the samantic wiki, you need to contact Fandom Support (info here). --Tangerineduel / talk 06:11, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
I can certainly help with setting things up. Just came me here to note that we generally (read: the only time it's been relevant) do a probationary period first, before bestowing adminship. This is to make sure the user is comfortable enough with running it not to accidentally cause any damage.
For future reference, this can probably be waived in the case that the user in question has prior PWB experience on other wikis.

The megeve Experiment and doctor at sea

These films were both made by Reeltime productions, but I don't know why this is a problem because things such as 'Downtime' are on the wiki fandom. Additionally, I have bought the film, watched the film, and there is a section towards the end where Sophie Aldred and Deborah Watling are in character, Victoria and Ace, in a 6 minute sketch called 'Crossed Lines'. This is where they meet and talk about defeating the Yeti. Again this should not be a problem, because Deborah Watling and Frazer Hines were in 'Emperor of the Daleks' which again is on the wiki fandom. So yes, Victoria Waterfield does appear in The Megeve Experiment. (The Megeve Experiment is a documentary that follows them making the film which they show in full towards the end). If there was a problem with the layout of the page, then instead of saying there is, maybe you could change it, seeing as I'm the only one who has edited a page of The Megeve Experiment since its release 20 years ago. My third point, is on my bio. What problem does that have? I made an account a few years ago where I was an avid editor of the wiki fandom. One day I could not access this and found it completely gone from everything. So I made a new one and put that in my bio. I do not know why this is a problem. So instead of getting so busy, maybe do some better research next time and actually watch the film before you comment like you know everything about others who have actually watched the film.

Talk:Series 14 (Doctor Who) could use some admin attention. The user involved has made it very clear that they're uninterested in discussing the issue and went right back to editing the page without trying to resolve the disagreement. I tried to resolve this with them.

I've had my discussion, I've said my piece and stated the very definition of assumptions and logic, it's on you if you don't like it.

How you deal with it is your own choice, but they've explicitly said that they're going to keep doing this each time that the page stops being protected. Najawin 03:47, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Idea floating - status?

Hello.

I work with a friend in writing a series that ties in with the franchise. The main characters are the contemporary (present-day) children/grandchildren of various past companions, some of whom we've seen already (Sarah Jane Smith's children and their three friends (and supercomputer and robot dog), Jo Grant/Jones' oldest grandson Santiago (and her OC estranged youngest son Logan), Harry Sullivan's grandson Harry III) and some of whom are new to this (Mike Bates' OC grandchildren twins Alex (m) and Rachel, etc.)

Can I ask: if yours truly was to put posts up here asking around as to who fans would like to see represented (OC names, personalities, special skills, etc.), would that be breaking the rules of the site?

Many thanks,

Forums site announcement

Hi, I don't know if this falls under your jurisdiction, but the little site announcement box on web still says only The Panopticon is open, "with other boards to follow shortly" – this should maybe be changed to reflect all the current boards now being open? (Also, any joy with Template:Wales crew?) Starkidsoph 00:12, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Fair enough, I would want to be sure about that too! I think the only evidence I had for assuming they were all open is Forum:The Cloisters#The Index calling them "the five currently active Forum Boards," which could have been written in advance. And I completely understand about Wales crew – you're busy, and it's really not that urgent in the scheme of things! Starkidsoph 07:00, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Re: my initial question here, I think it's fair to say Forum:Inclusion debates and Forum:Advice and Assistance at the very least are well and truly up and running. Admins have been answering questions in both without any mention of the boards not technically being open yet – certainly nothing like Scrooge's note here back in May (which I think had to do with outright technical limitations). Tardis Data Core change to Tardis Wiki

With the change in logo (which looks great), the name change however does leave a lot of detritus around the wiki, even on the Forum main page, which I'd presume a lot of us have just not even seen as we make for the discussions themselves. I think a lot of the places where 'Tardis Data Core' appears is likely places that we as regular users won't even notice, but may be confusing for new users. --Tangerineduel / talk 14:19, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

I think we may need a forum thread make this official. I know from the logo change the idea was that it was just the logo being changed, but it does imply a change of name to the wiki. I also look at it from the perspective of a new user. The logo says 'Tardis Wiki' the name of the wiki is 'Tardis'. It's only when you deep dive on our documentation does it actually reveal what the wiki's name is and that requires a bit of an explanation to get there. --Tangerineduel / talk 14:59, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and created a forum topic for this, upon researching it realised I've led this discussion in the past. Forum:Change name of wiki to Tardis Wiki. --Tangerineduel / talk 03:20, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

CrewCredit style template for Property:Interviewee ????

Hi Bongo,

How easy would it be for you to make a Template:CrewCredit style template for the Property:Interviewee?

I was thinking it would look something like this -

to show this -

Is this practical? or am I misunderstanding how SMW works? Just an idea.

Thanks. Doc77can 20:44, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Cool, thanks for the answer, I'm in no rush at the moment, so again enjoy your hols.
I'm not sure what you mean re: Do you want to store the role alongside the name of the interviewee?
If you mean in the property section at the bottom of the page, I don't think that's necessary. The Role (with link)/Role (with no link) part is just because I know some users link the Roles and others don't. Doc77can 00:41, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi Bongo, I've been slowly added your template to CON pages; I've got 2 questions:
Cheers. Doc77can 15:33, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Also Bongo, what should be the policy for interviewees who aren't credited, i.e. no caption appears onscreen saying their name/role?
Thanks. Doc77can 18:48, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
OK, cool. Have you got any further with the combined interviewee credits? Doc77can 20:24, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Spanish book plagiarises the Tardis Wiki

Hello! Not sure if this is the place where I can talk to you abour this, but hope Tardis Wiki admins see this. In September, the Spanish publisher Dolmen is bringing out a Doctor Who chapter guide book and we fans have realised that they are shamelessly plagiarising your website, taking advantage of the fact that in Spanish-speaking countries we hardly have any material from the series. Today they showed a couple of examples with two chapters and one of my friends saw how much of the data was a copy of yours. (https://twitter.com/XiscoLozano/status/1687099103195631617) We think it's very unfair that your work is being taken advantage of to extract money from fans, so we decided to let you know to see if you could do something about it. This is the link to their shop: https://dolmeneditorial.com/tienda/doctor-who-cinco-doctores/ Kind regards. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Naikiara (talk • contribs) .

Abuse filter

Hi there Bongo, I noted that you recently implemented a new abuse filter labelled "Stop twitter vadalism", and now it won't let me add facts to List of future releases. I was just wondering what the reason for this was? Aquanafrahudy 📢 20:02, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

I keep getting the same error message no matter what I add to any page. — Fractal Doctor @ 20:03, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Sorry to jump on to Aquanafrahudy's post btw. But it seems to have gone away now. I can edit again. A glitch in the matrix? — Fractal Doctor @ 20:04, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
I think he edited it again, and now it's fixed. Aquanafrahudy 📢 20:06, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Earned badges

Speaking of glitches in the matrix, when I view my profile (or indeed anyone's profile), I can see the 'earned badges' and all the icons, but it doesn't say what they actually are. A while back, hover-text would appear to explain each badge. Not sure if it's just on my end, or what, but that hover text no longer shows up so I can't find out what each badge actually represents! Just thought I'd mention it. — Fractal Doctor @ 20:12, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Report page

I’d like to report this page. Not only does it have nothing to do with Doctor Who, but given that the one who most recently edited (and likely created it) has the same name, I assume it was created purely as a bizarre attempt at self-promotion. - User:Axalotl09 @ 22:32, 31st August 2023 (GMT)]]

Bot admin request

Apologies for the delay in responding / acting on the request, have done so now. --Tangerineduel / talk 14:02, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Do you think these pages should be merged?

I think all of the sex related pages should be merged. I feel like the topic isn't big enough in the whoniverse for it to need seperate pages. It would be more organized if all sex related things were on the "Sex" page. Sliderhostmimic 17:09, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Bot run

Hiya, next time you do a bot run with @Botgo50, can you please shift the contents of Category:Bernice Summerfield stories to Category:Bernice Summerfield sources reflect the inclusion of non-narrative sources?

Admin+

Hey there! I’m reaching out to introduce the Admin+ program (if you haven’t heard about it already!) & let you know I’m here if you have any questions about it. Take a look at the details here & feel free to send over any questions you have. pikushi ✧.* <staff /> 20:25, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Thread closures

Hey, is there any movement on Forum:10 Years on, Amnesty Once More and Forum:(SPOILER: The start of RtD2) Quickstart Guides? I'd ask Scrooge, but I think he'd consider himself to have a conflict of interest on the first one. (You might as well. But Scrooge seems more likely to.) Najawin 20:05, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

No worries. Those two are just somewhat time sensitive. Najawin 19:06, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Just a gentle reminder. Najawin 19:19, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Editing on Davros

Hello, messaging you to let you know that there is an edit war that has been going on for quite a bit at Davros where User:Greenarcher190 keeps adding new images. I and other users have attempted to direct them to the talk page, but they have continually ignored this and have said they'll keep adding it regardless. BlueSupergiant 22:19, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Apologies for contributing to the 'war'. I have repeatedly tried to explain, on the user's talk page and in edit notes why we have made undo edits, but to no avail. — Fractal Doctor @ 22:20, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
Now the user has just resorted to vandalism, trying to delete whole paragraphs from the Talk page. — Fractal Doctor @ 22:40, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi Bongo. Thank you for resolving the edit conflict. I just wanted to jump back in here quickly to apologise if any of my wording or actions were unacceptable. Had a long day and realised I should've just reported this to an admin sooner, rather than engage in the war/with the user further than I did. For that, I unreservedly apologise. — Fractal Doctor @ 22:57, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

(I note the user is still vandalising and edit warring. I'll leave this to you. Again, apologies for my misplaced conduct.) — Fractal Doctor @ 23:00, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Can you help?

Hello,

I have run into a problem with this site.

For most of the past year, I have been trying to get the "contribute for a year" badge. However, yesterday, it appears that my progress counter had been reset.

Is there any way I can somehow regain my progress on this? Other than having to start all over again?

Many thanks,

Kevin 'Chalky' Kaiba 12:03, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
