Universes Beyond: Doctor Who is a set of Doctor Who themed Magic: The Gathering trading game cards that were released by Wizards of the Coast on 13 October 2023.[1] The set was announced 18 August 2022.[2][3]

The Doctor Who set was part of Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond series, which utilises the worlds, characters, and stories of other intellectual properties while featuring the gameplay of Magic: The Gathering. The Doctor Who set was the third major Universes Beyond release (not including special Secret Lair releases and Universes Beyond cards available in regular sets), following sets based on Warhammer 40,000 and The Lord of the Rings.

The product release was comprised of four 100-card Commander decks, Collector Boosters, and tie-in Secret Lairs. The main set (set code WHO) contains 189 new Doctor Who themed cards as well as Doctor Who themed reprints of regular Magic: The Gathering cards. Universes Beyond: Doctor Who was the first Commander deck release to include collector boosters, with no additional new cards, that only feature alternate versions of the cards in the decks.

Products[[edit]]

Commander Decks[[edit]]

Each of the Commander decks is based around a specific theme featuring Doctor Who characters and Magic: The Gathering mechanics that fit into that theme. Every Doctor card is a two-colour Legendary Creature card, while every companion card is a mono-colour Legendary Creature card. "Doctor's Companion" is a partner variant keyword ability featured on these companion cards that allows you to designate that companion as part of a Commander pair so long as the other partner card is a Doctor (any version of The Doctor with the creature type exactly, and not anything in addition to, Time Lord Doctor). For the purposes of designing the decks, companions were defined as someone who stays with the Doctor and travels with them for a long time.

Each Commander deck package contains:

  • Two traditional foil cards of the Doctor-Companion face Commander pair, for the three Doctor decks, and Davros, Dalek Creator and Missy, for the Masters of Evil deck
  • An etched foil "display" Commander printed on a thicker cardstock not legal for play. This is the face card Doctor, for the three Doctor decks, and Davros, Dalek Creator, for the Masters of Evil deck
  • The remaining 98 cards of the deck
  • 10 oversized Doctor Who themed Planechase cards featuring 9 planes and 1 phenomenon
  • One six-sided planar die featuring one side with the planeswalker symbol and one side with the chaos symbol, with the four remaining sides being blank
  • 10 double-sided tokens featuring Doctor Who themed art and mechanics
  • A deck box and a life wheel, for tracking the player's life total, both featuring the package artwork of the deck's face Commanders
  • A strategy insert and reference card
  • A 2-card sample collector booster pack

There are 50 mechanically new Doctor Who cards per deck with the remaining 50 cards being Doctor Who themed reprints of regular Magic: The Gathering cards.

Collector Booster Cards[[edit]]

Booster pack artwork (Shahab Alizadeh)

The Collector Booster product contains no additional new cards which is a change from previous Collector Booster products for other Magic: The Gathering sets, including Universes Beyond series. The Collector Boosters feature foil and alternate art versions of the cards that can only be found in these boosters. These cards are alternate versions of the 201 cards (191 cards plus 10 basic lands) found in the four preconstructed Commander decks.

Types of cards found in Doctor Who Collector Boosters:

  • Time And Relative Dimension In Space - TARDIS "Showcase" cards feature a TARDIS border with unique stylised artwork depicting Doctor Who's most iconic characters and events.
  • Beyond the Borders - Extended art cards. These use the regular Universes Beyond frame treatment with the art only extended in the top half of the card. Only rare and mythic rare cards in the set get this treatment. Sagas, adventurer, and split cards are excluded.
  • Timey-Wimey But Make it Shiny - Traditional foil and surge foil cards. These are foil versions of the cards in the Commander decks. All card variants in the set are available in both foil treatments.
  • Travel With Your Favorite Doctor - Serialized textured versions of the first thirteen Doctor Showcase cards. Instead of an exact 500 numbered prints of each Doctor, each Doctor will have 500 plus the Doctor's "number" (i.e. The Fourth Doctor has 504 serialized cards, The Tenth Doctor has 510 serialized cards, The Thirteenth Doctor has 513 serialized cards).

The 2-card sample collector booster packs found in each Commander deck product include an additional token/advertising card not found in any other product and two alternate-frame cards, at least one of which appears as rare or mythic rare.

The Decks, New Cards and Reprints[[edit]]

Set Breakdown[[edit]]

Each individual named card released in this set has multiple variants with the exception of the promo Past in Flames. The following attributes apply to each card; the card frame: Regular, Extended, or Showcase; and the foiling: Non-Foil, Traditional Foil, Surge Foil, or Etched Foil. All cards in the WHO set, including tokens, feature a TARDIS as the set symbol. The full breakdown of cards in the WHO set is as follows:

  • 0001-0191 - 189 New-to-Magic Doctor Who cards (includes three art variants of Sonic Screwdriver). Cards 0001 through 0008 are the face Commanders of the four decks and only exist in traditional foil. Traditional foil versions have the same card numbers but with a star indicator after the set code instead of a dot.
  • 0192-0195 - 4 Etched foil "display" Commanders printed on a thicker cardstock not legal for play.
  • 0196-0205 - 10 Doctor Who themed Basic Lands - two of each of the five basic land types. Traditional foil versions have the same card numbers but with a star indicator after the set code instead of a dot.
  • 0206-0331 - 123 Doctor Who themed Magic: The Gathering reprints (includes four art variants of Command Tower with different collector numbers).
  • 0332-0463 - 132 Extended art variants of only the rare and mythic rare cards between 0001-0191. This excludes the 19 sagas, 2 adventurer cards, and 2 split cards which do not have any extended art variants in the set. Traditional foil versions have the same card numbers but with a star indicator after the set code instead of a dot.
  • 0464-0534 - 71 Extended art variants of only the rare and mythic rare reprint cards between 0206-0331. Traditional foil versions have the same card numbers but with a star indicator after the set code instead of a dot.
  • 0464-0534 - 30 TARDIS "Showcase" cards. This treatment was used for all 15 Doctor cards (13 Doctors plus the War Doctor and Fugitive Doctor), all 5 Master cards (including Missy), only 4 Companions (the three face Commander Companions Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, and Yasmin Khan; and an additional in K-9, Mark I), 4 iconic enemies (Dalek Squadron, Davros, Dalek Creator, Weeping Angel, and Cyberman Patrol), River Song, and the TARDIS. Traditional foil versions and the thirteen serialized textured versions of the Doctors have the same card numbers but with a star indicator after the set code instead of a dot.
  • 0565 - Past in Flames traditional foil launch party promo card.
  • 0566-0605 - 40 oversized Doctor Who themed Planechase cards featuring 36 plane cards and 4 phenomenon cards.
  • 0606-0796 - 191 surge foil variants of all cards between 0001-0191.

  • 1055-1125 - 71 surge foil variants of all cards between 0464-0534.
  • 1126-1155 - 30 surge foil variants of all cards between 0464-0534.
  • 1156-1165 - 10 surge foil variants of all cards between 0196-0205.

Similarly, the token subset is broken down as follows:

  • T0001-T0032 - 32 different tokens available in non-foil and traditional foil. Traditional foil versions have the same card numbers but with a star indicator after the set code instead of a dot.
  • T0033-T0064 - 32 surge foil variants of tokens T0001-T0032. Note that T0064 Osgood, Operation Double is an alternative art from the non-foil/traditional foil T0032.

Bartek Fedyczak
White The Second Doctor and Zoe wearing the visors with cross eyeholes that they picked up in the SIDRAT; Jamie; a World War I biplane is visible; and three warriors standing amidst mirror-like fragments each holding a primed alien gun.
The first chapter brings all players into The War Games by creating warriors that must attack. The second and third chapters make everyone's warriors more powerful. The fourth chapter allows you to exile a nontoken creature you control in order to end The War games by exiling all warriors. This loosely represents the Doctor's exile to Earth at the end of the story. There is no alternate artwork for the Warrior token so the token created by this saga utilises the same "Caveman" token as The Cave of Skulls.

Miklós Ligeti
Green A Sea Devil, a smaller insert showing a Sea Devil navigating the minefield on the beach, the Third Doctor, the Master, the submarine moving through the Sea Devils' forcefield, and Jo.

The fourth chapter allows the player to search for a new Doctor ready to replace the Fifth Doctor's imminent regeneration.
The Caves of Androzani
Trial of a Time Lord
Audrey Benjaminsen
White The Sixth Doctor's head and shoulders against a starfield, the Inquisitor, three jurors of the judicial inquiry, and the Sixth Doctor in full with his back to the viewer. Three inserts of bald Peri/Kiv (TV: Mindwarp) are overlaid over the top image of the Doctor. Additional gold motifs represent the typical Time Lord decorative headdress and pointed shoulder design of their robes.
Three chapters exile creatures until the trial ends in Chapter IV. At that point, each player decides whether those three creatures collectively were innocent, and they return to the battlfield, or guilty, and they get put on the bottom of their owners' libraries. The four chapters loosely represent the four stories of the Trial of a Time Lord series, with the Doctor being deemed guilty by the evidence presented in the first three stories but ultimately judged innocent in The Ultimate Foe.
Trial of a Time Lord
The Curse of Fenric
Tatiana Veryayskaya
Green & White The Seventh Doctor with his umbrella, Ace in her 1940s costume, the Ancient One, and a chessboard with two grenades placed on the board instead of two chess pieces.
The first chapter converts/changes (destroys and creates a token) a creature for each player turning them into Haemovores with deathtouch. The second chapter changes a creature to become Fenric (a horror). The last chapter represents the betrayal of the Ancient One (one of the Haemovore tokens) when it forced Fenric into the isolation chamber to kill both of them with poison.

Borja Pindado
White The Eighth Doctor holding his hands out while shouting mid-regeneration over a chalice containing the Elixir of Life. A figure of the War Doctor stands amidst the energy spilling out of the cup. Ohila and three other sisters from the Sisterhood of Karn are shown looking on. The bottom of the image shows the crash of Cass's spaceship which had Cass, the Doctor, and the TARDIS on board.
The first chapter destroys all creatures which could be seen as the demise of Cass and/or the Doctor himself or could loosely represent the death of the Doctor's ideals as a Doctor of peace. The second chapter returns a legendary creature back to life representing the Doctor's regeneration. The counter chosen could be loosely seen as the characteristics of the War Doctor (first strike, vigilance or lifelink).

The Mind of Evil
Duggan, Private Detective
Craig J Spearing
Green & Blue Duggan in a room holding a chair up intending to use it as a weapon.
When Duggan appears, he investigates (Detective). He also is as powerful as he is knowledgable (number of cards in hand). In addition, this ability can only be used once.

Blue The First and Twelfth Doctors in Antarctica. They stand in front of the Twelfth Doctor's TARDIS. Time has stopped and snowflakes can be seen suspended midair.
The Adventure part of the card, Unlikely Meeting, searches for a Doctor. Twice Upon a Time can only be cast with two or more Doctors and gives you an extra turn. This loosely represents the two Doctors having one last adventure before their regenerations.

Reverse the Polarity
UBDW Reverse the Polarity.png
Randy Gallegos
Blue The Third Doctor brandishing his sonic screwdriver with a circular "wave" effect emmanating from it.
As with every time the Doctor has reversed the polarity of the neutron flow, this card can do different things: stop all other spells, invert creatures' stats or make them unblockable.
Flavour text quotes the Third Doctor stating, “You see, before you reactivated it, I reversed the polarity of the neutron flow.”
Time Lord Regeneration
UBDW Time Lord Regeneration.png
Elizabeth Peiró
Blue Montage of the Fifth Doctor's companions (Tegan, Turlough, Kamelion, Nyssa, and Adric) as they appeared to him in his hallucination during his regeneration sequence.
This spell creates an effect that replaces a dying Doctor with another one from your library. Regenerate has a different mechanical meaning in Magic: The Gathering.
Flavour text quotes some of Fifth Doctor's last words, “Time to say goodbye.” just before he hallucinates his companions.
The Caves of Androzani
Artifacts
Ace's Baseball Bat
UBDW Ace's Baseball Bat.jpg
L J Koh
Colourless Ace's baseball bat in the process of being imbued with the Hand of Omega’s power in the open coffin.
The bat provides additional power and allows the user to strike first (quicker) when being blocked by a Dalek. It is easier to wield by legendary creatures.
Remembrance of the Daleks
Bessie, the Doctor's Roadster
David Auden Nash
Colourless Bessie being driven by the Third Doctor in a thunderstorm on a wet road.
Bessie is fast (haste) and make another legendary creature, presumably the driver, unblockable due to its speed. Bessie gets the driver to where they need to be without any impediment. Creatures that crew Bessie will not be able to take advantage of this so the ability needs to target a legendary creature that did not crew Bessie to be of use.
Doctor Who and the Silurians et al.
Five Hundred Year Diary
Kieran Yanner
Blue The Second Doctor peering over the top of his Five Hundred Year Diary while in the TARDIS.
Mechanically, the diary itself is a clue, and can be treated as such, as well as providing mana (in this case access to knowledge) for all clues that you control. Entering tapped could losely represent the Doctor finding it in his storage chest after regenerating.
The Power of the Daleks
Sonic Screwdriver
UBDW Sonic Screwdriver classic.jpg
Thanh Tuấn
Colourless Close up of the Fourth Doctor's sonic screwdriver. He holds it behind Davros's head. An effect of sparks and like emanate from the head of the screwdriver.
The screwdriver provides mana which could loosely represent energy. The second ability allows it to untap another artifact which is the screwdriver's way of interacting with other objects. The scry ability could be seen as the ability to provide readings on other objects. The fourth abillity is the screwdriver's way of solving any problem the Doctor and his companions may have and getting them out of situations where they would be imprisoned or similar (unblockable).

Gallifrey Stands
Magic The Gathering The Day of the Doctor art.jpg
Alexander Gering
White & Blue The Eleventh Doctor's dream of him and his previous incarnations observing Gallifrey being attacked by Daleks during the Last Great Time War.
When Gallifrey Stands is played, the player gets to return all Doctor cards to their hand and then subsequently put one into play each turn. It features an "alternate win condition" that causes the player to win the game if they control thirteen or more Doctors.
Loosely represents all the Doctors coming together to save Gallifrey from the Last Great Time War.

Lands
Gallifrey Council Chamber
UBDW Gallifrey Council Chamber.jpg
Lixin Yin
Colourless The Lord President of the High Council of Time Lords addressing hundreds of Time Lords in the Gallifrey Panopticon.
The surveil ability loosely represents reviewing a plan (using The Moment) and dismissing it over another potentially better future plan. Adds mana of any colour to cast a spell or activate an ability of a Time Lord or Alien. As of the set's printing, and excluding Changelings, there are 27 Time Lord cards and 33 Alien cards (25 in Doctor Who, 8 in Unfinity) that this mana can be used for.
The End of Time
Trenzalore Clocktower
UBDW Trenzalore Clocktower.jpg
Eliz Roxs
Colourless The Eleventh Doctor receiving his new regenerations on the top of the clocktower in the town of Christmas on Trenzalore. His regenerative blast is channelled upwards into the Dalek's ship above (not pictured).
Every time you add mana, the clock ticks up until we reach twelve, at which point the counters are all removed and the game is "reset" with a fresh hand of cards and their graveyard shuffled into their library. This can only be activated if you control a Time Lord loosely symbolising that the fresh start/renewed regenerations is only for Time Lords.

An Unearthly Child
The Cave of Skulls
UBDW The Cave of Skulls.jpg
Nino Is
Earth Fire can be seen to be brandished by the tribe in the cave in the distance. A mammoth skeleton hangs over the cave entrance. The foreground and pathway to the cave entrance is littered with broken skulls of previous prisoners.
The scavenge ability allows the use of graveyard cards to make creatures bigger and fits thematically with the general actions of the Tribe of Gum. When chaos ensues, Warrior tokens are created.
An Unearthly Child
Caught in a Parallel Universe
Jake Murray
Phenomenon Split image showing the Inferno Earth on the left; with Section Leader Elizabeth Shaw and Brigade Leader Lethbridge-Stewart wearing his eyepatch and holding up a clenched fist; and the regular universe on the right; with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Liz Shaw.

Androzani Minor The Fifth Doctor hanging onto a ledge in the Spectrox Mines. This scene was not visually represented in this detail in the original story.
Every turn, the player loses life but gains a treasure. This loosely represents spectrox poisoning and the value of the refined spectrox. When chaos ensues, a Sharaz Jek (black human rogue) token is made along with a food token that could loosely represent the spectrox drug.
The Caves of Androzani
Gardens of Tranquil Repose
UBDW Gardens of Tranquil Repose.jpg
Álvaro Calvo Escudero
Necros The main buildings of Tranquil Repose and the associated gardens can be seen. An image of Davros appears in the sky looking over the scene.
The "Suspended Animation" flavour ability word exiles creatures that die and allows their controllers to scry (the future). Those same exiled creatures will get converted into Daleks whenever chaos ensues. This is a direct representation of the process that Davros hoped to achieve from the perpetualyl instated.
Revelation of the Daleks
The Cheetah Planet
Andreas Rocha
Outside Mutter's Spiral Three of the Cheetah People on their planet, two of which are on horseback.

Timey-Wimey[[edit]]

Timey-Wimey is a blue, red, and white deck focused on the new Time Travel mechanic which manipulates time counters on the player's cards and time related Magic: The Gathering mechanics including suspend and vanishing. The deck highlights the earliest Doctors of the new series from 2005 to 2013 with The Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler being the face Commander pair of the deck.

Deck Blurb[[edit]]

Allons-y!

Grab your companions and battle across the universe in Magic's definitive multiplayer format. The Tenth Doctor bends reality with his time travel ability, adding time counters to speed up or slow down your cards. When you need to stay alive, opt to delay—before outwitting your enemies in due time!

The Tenth Doctor

Energetic and charismatic, the Tenth Doctor is always ready for adventure. He finds joy in the mundane and the strange, but he is still capable of fiery righteous fury against his enemies. The guilt and regret from the Time War still lingers with him, driving him to make the universe a better, more peaceful place.

What is Planechase?

Planechase is a cool way to shake up your Commander games with your friends. Use a deck of plane cards and a special planar die to trigger unique abilities and take your TARDIS through time and space!

The chapters retell the sending of Rose backwards in time to save her where she then becomes the Bad Wolf, then time travelling forwards in time, and finally the destruction of the Dalek fleet.

New Earth
Sally Sparrow
UBDW Sally Sparrow.jpg
Tatiana Veryayskaya
White & Blue Sally holding the TARDIS key in front of Wester Drumlins. A Weeping Angel stands behind her, poised to attack.
Sally's abilities allow for surprise appearances by creatures (loosely representative of the Weeping Angels) and clues left behind when creatures disappear (loosely representative of creatures being sent back in time by the angels).
Blink
Astrid Peth
Ekaterina Burmak
White Astrid armed with a metal pipe batting away a Host's halo. She is dressed in her Titanic waitress uniform.
Atrid's ability makes food which represents her job as a waitress. Her flavour ability word, "Brand-new Sky" is the Doctor's quote to Astrid prior to exploring Earth which is represented by the card exploring when a clue or food is sacrificed.
Voyage of the Damned
Wilfred Mott
John Di Giovanni
White Wilf sitting outside on top of a hill, behind his daughter's house in Chiswick, with his telescope. His mouth is open in disbelief as he is pointing, assumedly, at Donna waving to him from the Doctor's TARDIS.
Wilf is represented as a soldier since he was stationed in Palestine as a private in the British Army, His "Look to the Stars" flavour ability word loosely represents Wilf's nightly vigil looking to the stars for alien life. Each turn he accumulates time counters and can "see further" in time each time.
Partners in Crime
Jenny, Generated Anomaly
Mandy Jurgens
Red & White Jenny, in her combat fatigues, standing in the escape shuttle about to leave Messaline.
Jenny is a Time Lord Soldier which ties into how she was generated and her purpose. She has double strike loosely representing her eagerness to attack, and often. Her combat trigger to explore ties into her desire to leave Messaline to explore the universe.
Flavour text quotes Jenny telling the Doctor, “Time to run again. Love the running.” which is a typical expectation for any Doctor's adventures.
The Doctor's Daughter
Idris, Soul of the TARDIS
Manuel Castañón
Blue & Red Idris standing at the central console of the Junk TARDIS with her hands outstretched funnelling power into the time rotor in order to operate it.
Idris's card uses the existing Magic: The Gathering imprint keyword ability. The artifact imprinted is loosely supposed to represent the TARDIS so her card gains all the TARDIS's (imprinted artifact) abilities and an additional strength bonus. Idris could not hold her humanoid form for long and the vanishing ability represents this and she will be sacrificed when the last time counter is removed.
The Doctor's Wife
Kate Stewart
UBDW Kate Stewart.jpg
Thanh Tuấn
Blue, Red & White Kate standing cross-armed at UNIT HQ under the Tower of London. Other UNIT members sit working at computer desks.

The Power of Three
Adipose Offspring
UBDW Adipose Offspring.jpg
John Tedrick
White Three Adipose on a bathroom floor after the full parthenogenesis of Stacy Campbell.
Adipose Offspring can be cast for four mana to result in two 2/2 white Alien creatures (the original card and the token). This loosely represents the partial parthenogenesis that would leave the host alive. It has an alternate Emerge casting cost which allows casting the spell for a different bigger effect if you sacrifice another creature. Full parthenogenesis is represented by creating a number of tokens equal to the sacrificed creature's toughness where toughness in Magic: The Gathering is usually used to denote size.
Partners in Crime
Atraxi Warden
Slawomir Maniak
White An Atraxi ship scanning a church using its eye.
The Atraxi Warden can be suspended so that it takes a while to arrive or cast for its full cost. When it finally arrives, it exiles a tapped (imprisoned) creature.
The Eleventh Hour
Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
Narendra Bintara Adi
Red & White Shows the eponymous Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. These include "Tricey", a triceratops, smashing through some wooden crates with two raptors alongside it.
The card helps typal decks (previously called tribal) since it makes your other dinosaurs bigger and gives them vigilance and trample. The suspend ability of this card loosely ties into the way that the dinosaurs appeared during the Doctor's time on the spaceship by creating multiple pteranodon before (re)appearing itself. Creates flying hasty dinosaur tokens. Magic: The Gathering does not distinguish between different prehistoric reptiles so all land, air, and water-based reptiles collectively use the creature type dinosaur.
Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
Flesh Duplicate
Kekai Kotaki
Blue Jennifer Lucas' Ganger, with a stretched neck, wearing an acid suit at the acid-mining factory.
Flesh Duplicate is a shapeshifter rebel (TV: The Rebel Flesh) that only lasts for three turns before being sacrificed. Loosely ties into the use of Gangers for hazardous labour at the acid-mining factory.
The Rebel Flesh, The Almost People
Judoon Enforcers
UBDW Judoon Enforcers.jpg
Alexandr Leskinen
Red & White Four Judoon on a street in Gloucester. Three of them have their helmets on and are holding their guns. The leader stands, without his helmet on, pointing with his right hand.
The enforcers modify combat by limiting the number of creatures that can attack you in combat. The suspend ability loosely signifies the time taken for them to arrive.
Fugitive of the Judoon
Sibylline Soothsayer
Anna Pavleeva
Red Four members of the Sibylline Sisterhood on their knees in a temple surrounded by lit candles. They hold their hands up covering their eyes revealing the painted eyes on the back of their hands.

UBDW Time Beetle.jpg
John Tedrick
Blue The Time Beetle on Donna's back. Two ghostly images of Donna appear to the left and right of the beetle indicating the divergent pathways available to Donna.
The beetle has the skulk ability which means that it can generally attack without being blocked (noticed). The flavour ability word "Parallel Universe" allows the player to time travel upon dealing combat damage to a player representing the maniuplation of timelines by the beetle.

Wibbly-wobbly, Timey-wimey
SkinnyElbows
Blue A flat-screen television showing the Tenth Doctor in the back room of Larry's DVD shop.
Features the "Time travel" keyword action.
Flavour text quotes the Tenth Doctor saying, "People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff."
Blink
Ecstatic Beauty

Mechanically, the spell takes a while to resolve and allows additional spells to be played.
Flavour text quotes Vincent as he explains how he sees things to the Doctor, “Try to see what I see. We are so lucky we are still alive to see this beautiful world.”
Vincent and the Doctor
All of History, All at Once
Nestor Ossandon Leal
Blue Opening scene showing London with pterodactyls flying over children playing in Hyde Park and cars floating from hot air balloons. A woolly mammoth rears up on its hindlegs as it is being attacked by Roman centurions.
The Storm mechanic copies the spell it is on for each spell played before it that turn. Since the spell effect is to Time Travel, this loosely represents multiple times all happening at once.
The Wedding of River Song
The Wedding of River Song
Mandy Jurgens
White Shows the Eleventh Doctor and River in the middle of the quick version of their wedding ceremony.
The spell allows the player to choose an opponent to also benefit from the spell's effects. It is worth noting that the Time Travel part of the spell is not symmetrical so the player represents the Doctor in the casting of this spell while the chosen opponent represents River Song who doesnt time travel.

Gallifrey Falls // No More
John Di Giovanni
Red & White The Eleventh Doctor and Amy looking at the left side of the Gallifrey Falls No More landscape painting depicting the fall of Arcadia on the final day of the Last Great Time War. The Eleventh Doctor and the Curator looking at the right side of the painting.
Either part of the spell can be cast, "Gallifrey Falls" or "No More" or both fused together to be cast as "Gallifrey Falls No More". The Gallifrey Falls portion of the card deals damage to all creatures and exiles them if they would die. The No More portion of the card "saves" a specific number of creatures by phasing them out signifying Gallifrey phasing out of existance after the Last Great Time War.
The Day of the Doctor
Artifacts
Psychic Paper
Colin Boyer
Colourless A blank Psychic Paper being held up by the Tenth Doctor in a folding wallet.

The Girl in the Fireplace
Sonic Screwdriver
UBDW Sonic Screwdriver Tenth.jpg
Anthony Devine
Colourless The Ninth and Tenth Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver sitting on the TARDIS's console amidst yellow sticky notes, cables, and a monitor display.

The Moment
Patrik Hell
Colourless The Moment represented as both the box with dials on it and Rose who sits on a canvas covered crate in the background.

Journey's End
Lake Silencio
John Di Giovanni
Earth Red car on the edge of Lake Silencio.

The Impossible Astronaut
New New York
Sean Vo
New Earth An aerial view of New New York with a close up of a few flying cars.
Very loose representation of the stories that have taken place on New Earth. The animation of artifacts into vehicles could be seen to represent the cars on the Motorway during Gridlock while the Alien and Treasure tokens could be seen to be the generational plight of the survivors stuck in the cyclical traffic with the alien token being any offspring born in the cars and the treasure token not connected to any specific part of the stories. In addition, the Alien token created is the the same as the token created by Adipose Offspring as opposed to being a New New Earth humanoid species.
New Earth
Ood Sphere
Evan Shipard
Horsehead Nebula The ice buildings and snow-covered mountains of the Ood Sphere. Many Ood can be seen standing in groups amongst the structures.
The flavour ability word "Song of the Ood" represents the collective song that Ood use. Convoke allows the player to cast spells by using their creatures as a resource to do so. They become part of the "song" to cast that spell. The flavour ability word "Red-Eye" uses the goad mechanic to represent taking psychic control of an Ood and forcing them to attack another opponent,
Planet of the Ood, The End of Time
Pompeii
Logan Feliciano
Earth Mount Vesuvius exploding showering Pompeii in lava and ash in 79 CE.
Every turn, and on blank planar die roles, Pompeii accumulates more eruption counters on it until chaos ensues and it damages each creature and player. Players sacrifice a land in the process signifying the loss of Pompeii itself, before planeswalking away. Note that the eruption can be avoided by planeswalking away before chaoes ensues.

Paradox Power[[edit]]

Paradox Power is a green, blue, and red deck focused on the new Paradox mechanic that provides an effect whenever you cast a spell from anywhere but your hand. This is combined with the Magic: The Gathering mechanics Escape, Cascade, Flashback and Retrace which cast spells from your deck, exile or graveyard. The deck highlights the new series' more recent Doctors from 2014 to 2022 with The Thirteenth Doctor and Yasmin Khan being the face Commander pair of the deck.

Deck Blurb[[edit]]

Brilliant!

Grab your companions and battle across the universe in Magic's definitive multiplayer format. Confound your foes with the paradox mechanic, which rewards you for playing cards from unconventional places. With the help of the Thirteenth Doctor, you can build up counters with every paradox, untap your creatures, and power your engine for victory.

The Thirteenth Doctor

The Thirteenth Doctor approaches the universe with boundless curiosity and zeal for life. Quick to make friends, she views her companions as family and can be fiercely protective of the defenseless and the downtrodden. Her eagerness to help can, at times, lead to more trouble, but she's always willing to put herself at risk to defend others.

What is Planechase?

Planechase is a cool way to shake up your Commander games with your friends. Use a deck of plane cards and a special planar die to trigger unique abilities and take your TARDIS through time and space!

Blue & Red The Twelfth Doctor rocking out on a tank playing an electric guitar with a portcullis in the background.
The Twelfth Doctor card has a triggered ability that triggers once a turn for the first spell cast from anywhere other than your hand which fits into the deck's Paradox theme. The ability allows the player to demonstrate which loosely represents the Twefth Doctor teaching his companions through his actions. The card's second ability makes the Doctor stronger for each copied spell, including the demonstrated spells.

UBDW The Fugitive Doctor.jpg

Showcase
Steve Morris
Red & Green The Fugitive Doctor wearing her yellow sunglasses at her console in her own TARDIS.
The Fugitive Doctor investigates (creates a Clue token) when it enters the battlefield loosely representing her curiousity in finding out who she was/used to be. Her second ability is representative of using clues to assist in recasting spells that were presviously cast (flashback). This could loosely tie into the word flashback itself and the fact that the Fugitive Doctor is an earlier incarnation from before the First Doctor.
Fugitive of the Judoon
Companions
Clara Oswald
UBDW Clara Oswald.jpg
Marta Nael
Colourless / Colour of your choice Clara Oswald standing in the open doorway of the TARDIS above the Thames River in London as they look for the "trap street". Note that she is not wearing the Twelfth Doctor's sonic sunglasses.
The Impossible Girl flavour ability word allows Clara to be any one of Magic's five colours if she is your Commander (or one of your Commanders if paired with a Doctor) and can only be colourless if she is not a Commander. This ties into the various "versions" of Clara that have existed over time. Clara's assistance with the Doctor throughout their many incarnations is loosely represented by her ability that causes Doctors' triggered abilities to trigger an additional time.

Yuliya Litvinova
Blue Nardole, wearing a wool beanie and a coat, searching for the surgeon pictured on the piece of paper that he is holding. He is standing in front of the TARDIS, with snowflakes falling on a snowy Christmas Day, on the colony of Mendorax Dellora.

Once he comes back, he will have a counter on him and be able to be resourceful in providing mana. He is a scientist and the mana he produces can only be used to cast noncreature spells which is represantative of his abilities with technology and inventions once his body was reconstructed by the Doctor and he became the Doctor's companion.

Sonic Screwdriver
Pauline Voss
Colourless The Thirteenth Doctor holding up her newly built sonic screwdriver with a pair of pliers.

Masters of Evil[[edit]]

Masters of Evil is a blue, black, and red deck focused on the new Villainous Choice ability word that presents the player's opponents with a choice of effects, all of which are detrimental to them. The deck has an artifact creature subtheme that includes myriad cards that duplicate attackers when attacking multiple opponents and artifact cards that have a mututally detrimental affect to all opponents or players. The deck highlights the villains of Doctor Who with Davros, Dalek Creator as the face Commander of the deck and Missy as the alternate face Commander.

Deck Blurb[[edit]]

Exterminate!

Grab your companions and battle across the universe in Magic's definitive multiplayer format. The Doctor's greatest foes unite to deal damage to multiple opponents. Davros rewards you for each opponent who loses 3 or more life, so finding ways to punch through the table's defenses will clear the path to your villainous victory.

Davros

One of the Doctor's prime adversaries is Davros, a former military scientist and the original creator of the Daleks. Davros isn't always aligned with his deadly creations, but his callousness and cruelty often rivals theirs. He enjoys tormenting the Doctor through their many encounters, but he has yet to truly defeat the resilient Time Lord.

What is Planechase?

Planechase is a cool way to shake up your Commander games with your friends. Use a deck of plane cards and a special planar die to trigger unique abilities and take your TARDIS through time and space!

Secret Lair Cards[[edit]]

Two Secret Lair releases, Doctor Who: The Dalek Lands and Doctor Who: The Weeping Angels, were released on October 2nd, 2023 for sale as part of the Secret Lair Spookydrop 2023. Each set has five borderless full art cards that are functional reprints of existing Magic: The Gathering cards. A third set, Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration was released on December 11th, 2023. Each set is available as a foil set and non-foil set. The cards are part of the Secret Lair set, SLD, and not part of the main WHO set, so they have the shooting star promo symbol as their set symbol instead of the TARDIS symbol.

Doctor Who: The Dalek Lands[[edit]]

The Dalek Lands cards showcase some of the Dalek's menacing appearances from the classic and new series. The Dalek Lands number from 1372 to 1376 and have a gold rarity symbol and R (rare) rarity that matches the original printing of these lands, known to Magic: The Gathering players as the "Kaladesh Enemy-Coloured Fast Lands". This reprint cycle is notable in that this is the first time that this land cycle has been reprinted.

The Weeping Angel cards showcase some of their most iconic appearances in the show. The angels number from 1377 to 1381 and have rarity symbols and letters that match the original printing of each card. These reskinned reprints are reprints of Magic: The Gathering angels that all have the flying keyword on them even though, canonically, Weeping Angels are not able to fly.

Doctor Who: Regeneration[[edit]]

Unlike the previous two Secret Lairs, this lair included mechanically-unique cards instead of reskinned reprints. Three cards were revealed on December 4th, 2023[4] with the Fifteenth Doctor and The Meep revealed on December 10th, 2023. The cards were not included in the Commander Decks so that they could be released closer to the specials without any spoilers and the card design would be true to the characters. This Secret Lair's cards number from 1580 to 1584 and all have a gold rarity symbol and R (rare) rarity.

All non-Doctor cards get put back on the bottom of the player's library in a random order. If one or more Doctor cards was milled when The Fourteenth Doctor was cast, you may have The Fourteenth Doctor enter the battlefield as a copy of one of those cards and it gains haste until end of turn.

The Fifteenth Doctor mills three cards and returns a mana value 2 or 3 artifact card to the player's hand when it enters play or attacks. Additionally, the Doctor makes casting nonartifact spells easier by using your artifacts to help cast them. This cards has a heavy focus on artifact synergy which may be symbolic of a future character trait of the Fifteenth Doctor.

Card Notes[[edit]]

  • The deck designers deemed companions to be defined as someone who stays with the Doctor and travels with them for a long time. Notably, this means that some cards that do not feature the Doctor's Companion ability feature characters that would traditionally be considered companions of The Doctor or companions whose companion status are a matter of debate amongst fans. These are Astrid Peth, Wilfred Mott, Alistair, the Brigadier, Missy, River Song, Rory Wiliams, and Sergeant John Benton.
  • Alistair, the Brigadier and Kate Stewart form a mirrored pair of cards. They are both rare legendary creatures that cost four mana (one generic mana and the three colours of their respective decks) and have their power and toughnesses as 3. Each has a triggered ability that creates soldier creature tokens and an attack trigger that asks for a payment of 8 mana to strengthen all of the player's creatures for that turn depending on the main theme of their respective decks, namely historic and time counters. The key difference (apart from colour and theme) between them is that Alistair is a soldier himself while Kate is a scientist.
  • Sonic Screwdriver and Laser Scewdriver also form a mirrored pair of cards. Each of these artifact cards represents the iconic tool of the Doctor and the Master. They both have four abilities: a mana ability, an ability that costs 1 mana that taps or untaps an artifact, an ability that costs 2 mana that either surveils (discards bad ideas) or scries (saves ideas for a later time), and an ability that costs 3 mana that either goads a creature or makes a creature unblockable.
  • The new creatures types introduced in the Doctor Who set are: Cyberman, Dalek, Detective, Doctor, and Time Lord. "Time Lord" is the first two-word creature type but is treated as one creature type. "Time" and "Lord" are not individual creature types on their own (although Lord used to be a creature type but has since been replaced and deprecated). The set also formerly introduced the Scientist creature type to black-border cards which had previously only appeared on two silver-bordered cards from the "joke" set, Unstable. Similarly, the creature type Alien was previously used on a playtest card (not an official card) and eight cards in Unfinity, three of which are "acorn" cards which are similar to silver-bordered cards in that they are also not legal for play in most tournament formats.
  • Rather than create multiple new creature types representing some of the humanoid species in Doctor Who, the set uses the Magic: The Gathering "Human" creature type as a catch-all to include a multitude of human-like humanoid races/species. This includes Alzarian (Adric, Mathematical Genius ), Trakenite (Nyssa of Traken), Proto-Time Lord (represented as Human Time Lord for River Song), and other unnamed humanoid species (Astrid Peth and Idris, Soul of the TARDIS).
  • Some humanoid characters were not attributed to the Human creature type based on the precedent set by the other humanoid creature cards in the set. Do note that this is sometimes due to a space issue on the physical card layout as opposed to a game mechanic or flavour reason.
    • Davros, Dalek Creator, a Kaled, is typed as an Alien instead of Human
    • Flesh Duplicate is typed as a Shapeshifter without the additional Human type that other humanoids have
    • Nardole (correctly typed as an artifact (cyborg)), Vislor Turlough and Sisterhood of Karn are all missing a race type which should be Human
    • The Soldier and Warrior tokens are exclusively made by cards (The War Games, The Cave of Skulls, Alistair, the Brigadier, Kate Stewart, UNIT Headquarters) that would all be human in nature, however, these tokens do not have the human creature type. Human Soldier and Human Warrior tokens already exist in Magic: The Gathering from other sets
  • The Magic: The Gathering "Alien" creature type is used in the Doctor Who set as a catch-all type to represent multiple non-human species that did not get their own new creature types.
  • Auton Soldier is missing the Shapeshifter creature type associated with other Magic: The Gathering cards that use the same copy ability.
  • Karvanista, Loyal Lupari is incorrectly named. It should use the singular form of Lupar instead of Lupari. Lupari is used correctly in the adventure portion of the card as an adjective.
  • The Sea Devils card creates green Alien Salamander tokens with islandwalk to represent Sea Devils. Sea Devils are sea water reptiles that cannot be deemed to be salamanders since salamanders only live in fresh water. In addition, Sea Devils evolved on Earth and cannot therefore be deemed to be Alien. The correct creature type for the tokens should have been Lizard (like Madame Vastra) instead of Alien Salamander.
  • Osgood, Operation Double creates a non-legendary token that is a copy of itself when cast. Two card artworks exist for Osgood in the set that form one complete image and represent the Human/Zygon versions of Osgood. The left side of the image features Osgood in her question mark jumper and loose red tie with the Blue Osgood Box to her right (from the viewer's standpoint) while the right side of the image features Osgood with her scarf and red bowtie with the Blue Osgood Box to her left (from the viewer's standpoint). The Osgood, Operation Double variants are as follows:

General References[[edit]]

  • Besieged Viking Village utilises the "boast" mechanic first seen in the real-world Viking inspired Magic: The Gathering set, "Kaldheim".
  • Artists Alice Zhang, Roberta Ingranata, Karen Hallion and Jeremy Enecio (via BBC Studios) have previously contributed artwork for the Doctor Who franchise.
  • The only historical figures featured on cards are Vincent van Gogh (Ecstatic Beauty), Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson (Human Noble), and Nikola Tesla (Surge of Brilliance).
  • An upcoming unannounced Secret Lair will feature a reference to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors.
  • The Release Notes[5] for Magic: the Gathering sets often have easter egg jokes placed within the card explanations. In the Doctor Who set, the easter eggs are:
    • Blink has the following text: "People often assume that Sagas are a strict progression from top to bottom, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey . . . stuff. That is, the rules support chapter abilities that appear to be out of order, like those on Blink. The first ability triggers when the first and third lore counters are added. The last ability triggers when the second and fourth lore counters are placed on it."
    • The Master, Multipled has the following text: "Notably, the part of myriad that makes you exile the creature tokens at end of combat is a triggered ability. This means that the ability will trigger, but you won't exile the tokens when it resolves. Since the tokens also have myriad, attacking with each of them will cause that myriad ability to trigger, causing the Master to, well . . . multiply."
    • Me, the Immortal has the following text: "Ashildr retains . . . I mean Me, the Immortal retains all counters, not just those granted by the first ability."
    • Weeping Angel has the following text: "As the first triggered ability of Weeping Angel resolves, it continues to be an artifact but will stop being both an Alien and an Angel until it becomes a creature again. It's just a statue, how dangerous could it be?"

Saga Episode References[[edit]]

Saga is a card type in Magic: The Gathering that is used to tell a story through multiple chapters that occur when you first play the card and then on each of your subsequent turns. The Saga cards in this set represent an iconic episode of each of the 15 Doctor's runs (including the War Doctor and the Fugitive Doctor). In addition, four villains also have episodes represented by associated Saga cards.

We're All Stories in the End - The 19 episodes represented are:

  1. An Unearthly Child for the First Doctor
  2. The War Games for the Second Doctor
  3. The Sea Devils for the Third Doctor
  4. City of Death for the Fourth Doctor
  5. The Caves of Androzani for the Fifth Doctor
  6. Trial of a Time Lord for the Sixth Doctor
  7. The Curse of Fenric for the Seventh Doctor
  8. The Night of the Doctor for the Eighth Doctor
  9. The Day of the Doctor for the War Doctor
  10. The Parting of the Ways for the Ninth Doctor
  11. The Girl in the Fireplace for the Tenth Doctor
  12. The Eleventh Hour for the Eleventh Doctor
  13. Heaven Sent for the Twelfth Doctor
  14. The Flux for the Thirteenth Doctor
  15. Fugitive of the Judoon for the Fugitive Doctor
  16. Genesis of the Daleks for Davros
  17. Blink for the Weeping Angels
  18. Day of the Moon for The Silence
  19. Death in Heaven for Missy

Other cards are named after episodes, despite not being Saga cards: "The Cave of Skulls", The Five Doctors, The Sound of Drums, The Wedding of River Song, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, Flatline, and Twice Upon a Time.

Notes[[edit]]

  • The cards were first shown off at the San Diego Comic-Con panel on 20 July 2023.[6]
  • Initial reactions to the set were decidedly mixed, with prominent Magic content creators being negative[7] and Lawrence Miles criticizing the product.[8]
  • All cards released as part of the WHO set and the tie-in Secret Lairs have a 2023 "© BBC" copyright notice on the bottom of the cards along with the Wizards of the Coast trademark and copyright notice.
  • All cards from the WHO set utilise the regular Universes Beyond frame treatment that includes a downward pointed triangle in the bottom of the frame. The triangle is a silver grey colour for Plane, Land, Common, and Uncommon cards; and holographic for rare and mythic rare cards. The Secret Lair cards do not feature the Universes Beyond frame but do have a holographic triangle.
  • Doctor Who previews prior to the set's release were conducted from October 2nd, 2023 until October 6th, 2023 via official sources (Wizards of the Coast and the BBC) as well as games news sites and Magic: The Gathering content creators.[9] Each deck received its own day with individual card previews followed by full deck list reveals. Timey-Wimey was revealed on October 3rd, Paradox Power on October 4th, Masters of Evil on October 5th, and Blast from the Past on October 6th 2023.
  • Actors, whose likeness was featured in the artwork of the cards, reviewed and signed off on artwork that featured them.[10]
  • The Night of the Doctor is the only two-chapter saga printed in Magic: The Gathering as of the set's release.
