In the Beginning was the first story in The History Tour series by Tim Quinn and Dicky Howett. The first part covered the beginning of the Sixth Doctor's "history tour" with Peri Brown in which they observed Event One and the start of life's evolution on Earth.

Worldbuilding

• The TARDIS materialises just before the Big Bang occurs and the Doctor explains that nothing has happened yet, giving the example that even Joan Collins is yet to be born.
• The Doctor implies to Peri that God started the Big Bang when answering her concerns about theologians.
• According to the Doctor, noxious gaseous fumes swirl about the heavens a few thousand years after the creation of the universe. He mistakes this era for downtown Los Angeles in rush hour.
• The Doctor describes the first life to evolve on Earth as "pink globulous sprogs of jelly". Peri accidentally tramples on one which the Doctor claims has set back evolution by roughly fifty million years.

Notes

• The Doctor's off-handed remark that the explosion that started the universe contains bits of Adric references his grizzly fate at the end of Earthshock.

• The TARDIS previously attempted to go back in time to Event One, only to be prevented from doing so. (TV: Castrovalva)
