Overview
Early announcements
On 28 September 2023, during the Doctor Who @ 60: A Musical Celebration concert to mark the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies joked about having plans for a "series 4" that there weren't room for in "series 3".[2]
On 1 November, Davies revealed in SFX magazine that he was already planning his "season 3" now, and that there are plans for a "season 4" to come.[3]
Promotion
The very first bit of promotion for this series came on 24 September 2021 with the reveal that Russell T Davies would be leading the show from the 60th anniversary and into "series beyond".[4]
On 6 January 2022, visual effects editor Emily Lawrence spoke to Doctor Who Magazine 573 and offered a look into what may be in store for the future of the show, hinting at 360 screens and gaming software akin to shows like The Mandalorian, saying "The 360 screens in "The Mandalorian" and how they used gaming software to create those amazing landscapes is something I’d love to see in "Doctor Who", the actors walk in front of the screen and the environment moves with them.", explaining it would get rid of green screens once and for all.[5]
On 8 May, Ncuti Gatwa, Millie Gibson shared a post on Instagram containing two hearts and a blue box.[6] Shortly after, it was officially announced by the BBC that Gatwa would take on the role of the Doctor.[7] Speaking on it, Gatwa said:
There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.
Showrunnner Davies added:
The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!

Along with these news was unveiled a new diamond-shaped logo.[15][16][17]
Speaking of these news, Davies said:
I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.
Disney+ President Alice Bowen also weighed in:
We’re excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world. The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalogue of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling.

And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started."[19]
On 20 November, the Scottish BAFTA's were held, attended by Peter Capaldi and Ncuti Gatwa, where Capaldi praised Gatwa and reminisced about his own time as the Twelfth Doctor, saying "[Steven Moffat was] looking for a new Doctor Who, he took me on the most magical journey, a journey that Ncuti is about to embark on. And I suspect Ncuti knows this already because I can see it in his heart and see it in him. But he’s about to discover how beautiful and wonderful and cosmic the human race can really be". Not every person who worked on this adventure was credited. The absence of a credit for a position doesn't necessarily mean the job wasn't required. The information above is based solely on observations of the actual end credits of the episodes as broadcast, and does not relay information from IMDB or other sources. |
Though not credited in any way, Mat Irvine did help considerably with the operation of K9 for this episode. In the DVD commentary, Phil Collinson acknowledges Irvine as the "operator of the original K9 prop", as seen in the very last scene of the episode, and admitting that the original prop had been stored in Irvine's garage and was found especially for this scene.
This episode marked a big change in the make-up department, with Barbara Southcott becoming the more-or-less permanent make-up designer on the show. Also, Millennium Effects became "Millennium FX" with this episode, and have been credited thus since.
Guido Cerasuolo's actual credit is "Line Producer Italy".
Ernie Vincze's surname is misspelled as "Vince" in the credits as originally transmitted.
This was the first episode of the BBC Wales series to have two credited script editors. Oddly, Emma Freud was credited at the end of the roll, suggesting she was considered more "senior" than Brian Minchin.
As on The Vampires of Venice, Patrick Schweitzer was double-credited as both producer and line producer.
This episode marked the Doctor Who debut of production designer Michael Pickwoad, the BBC Wales debut of costume designer Barbara Kidd, and the first time that something like twenty team members had been credited for their work on Doctor Who. It was the biggest sea change of behind-the-scenes personnel in BBC Wales history, much bigger, in fact, than the changes that had occurred with The Eleventh Hour.

Rumours
- Billie Piper expressed a willingness to return as Rose Tyler at some point "if the circumstances and the story were right”.[165]
- Matt Smith expressed a willingness to return as the Eleventh Doctor at some point "if the timing was right, and after giving Jodie Whittaker a chance. I think we've got to give a few years to Miss Whittaker to get the TARDIS under her belt, as it were, and then yeah — one day". [166]
- Davies' new era could bring back the Christmas Special.[167][168]
- According to The Mirror, the new era will get spin-offs focusing on villains such as the Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen, Sea Devils and Weeping Angels, centering around what they get up to when the Doctor is not around.[169]
- Spin-offs happening was further supported by Katy Manning, who also hinted at "people returning".[170]
- According to The Sun, Davina McCall - the voice of Davinadroid from Series 1 - will return to to the series, only this time playing a fictionalised version of herself.[171]
Production errors
- In the scene when Donna asks the woman if she could borrow £10 as it's Christmas, you can clearly see that Donna is wearing sports shoes instead of her usual white wedding shoes; Catherine Tate had been wearing sports shoes between takes.
- Even though it is supposed to be Christmas, it is obvious that the special was filmed during the summer, because all the trees have leaves on them, etc.
- When Donna returns to the reception, and the Doctor borrows a gentleman's phone, you see a menu item that says "Play". It is obvious that the HC Clements search that the Doctor does is a movie clip on the phone.
- The mask of the Roboform which abducts Donna in the taxi has eye lenses on its Santa mask which change from plain blue to fake eyes like those seen on the masks of other disguised Roboforms.
- When the Roboforms surround the hotel, they are armed with a flamethrower trombone, a missile-launcher tuba, a machine gun trumpet, a bugle of unknown ordnance, a tenor horn or euphonium of unknown ordnance, and the remote control for the bauble bombs. However, when they face the Doctor in the ballroom, the tenor horn/euphonium has been swapped for a curling, bugle-like instrument, looped over the Roboform's shoulder.
Continuity

- On learning that he and Donna have arrived in 1666, the Doctor advices Isaac Newton to avoid London. This is due to the Great Fire of London which he inadvertently caused in The Visitation [+]Loading...["The Visitation (TV story)"]
- When posing as Donna, one of the not-things mentions that the Doctor was not born on Gallifrey which they learned in The Timeless Children [+]Loading...["The Timeless Children (TV story)"].
