Erimem was a series of stories published by Thebes Publishing. Its stories feature Erimem, a recurring companion of the Fifth Doctor in Big Finish Productions's The Monthly Adventures. Iain McLaughlin, the creator and copyright holder of Erimem, was the series editor.
Overview[[edit] | [edit source]]
Iain McLaughlin created the character of Erimem for 2001's The Eye of the Scorpion, a Fifth Doctor audio story in Big Finish's The Monthly Adventures range. She became a prominent Fifth Doctor companion, recurring in his Monthly Adventures stories every year until her departure in 2008's The Bride of Peladon.
Simultaneously, McLaughlin further explored the character outside the context of Doctor Who audio: his 2004 Telos novella Blood and Hope; his 2005 New Worlds novel The Coming of the Queen, cowritten with frequent collaborator Claire Bartlett; the 2012 Kerides the Thinker story Return of the Queen, also cowritten with Bartlett; and a number of Short Trips short stories. These stories established that Erimem as a character had potential separate from Doctor Who.
The Erimem series began with The Last Pharaoh in 2015. It places Erimem in modern day London with a group of close friends, sometimes travelling to other times and places using a time machine called the Habitat.
To divorce itself from Erimem's period in Doctor Who, Erimem in the series had forgotten all of her life from around the beginning of The Eye of the Scorpion to the moment just before The Last Pharaoh began. As of March 2021[update], The Eye of the Scorpion is the only Doctor Who story from which Erimem has derived elements; however, elements from non-Doctor Who stories The Coming of the Queen and Return of the Queen have been included (such as Carra Wilton, Kerides, and Adrea).
Harkening back to Erimem's Big Finish days, BBV Productions obtained the rights to create new Erimem audio content, including audio adaptations of previously released Thebes novellas.
Erimem and characters from the series also appeared in the charity publication anthology Master Pieces in the short story Splinter of Eternity.
