London, also known as London Town (TV: The Wedding of River Song (TV story)) and London City, (AUDIO: Faustian (audio story), etc.) was the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It was a prominent city on Earth and was invaded by aliens many times. With the help of the Doctor, the invasions were repelled. Organisations such as UNIT, Torchwood One, MI5, MI6 and the Department also assisted in the defence of the city.
The city was founded as Londinium. (TV: The Romans (TV story)) By the 28th century, it had become part of the sprawling Central City, and by the 30th century, it had evolved into Spaceport Five Overcity, a hovering metropolis above the old London, now a slum called Spaceport Five Undertown. (PROSE: Original Sin (novel)) The Tenth Doctor believed London to be the "most exciting city in the world", (AUDIO: Technophobia (audio story)) while the Twelfth Doctor, conversely, thought it was "a dump". (TV: The Zygon Inversion (TV story)) Miss Multravers assessed it as the most populous and advanced city on the planet. (AUDIO: The Haunting (audio story))

Sometime between the 13th and early 17th century, the Houses of Parliament were built. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot (video game)) Also known as the Palace of Westminster, (PROSE: The Book of the War (novel)) Parliament was home to the two houses of England's, later the United Kingdom's, legislature: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Parliament ratified laws and gave assent to British monarch if they wished to raise taxes. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot (video game))
It was the home to the British monarchy, who resided at Buckingham Palace. (TV: Voyage of the Damned (TV story)) The British government was based in London and met in the Houses of Parliament. (TV: Aliens of London (TV story)) The city would eventually be absorbed into Central City, of which the whole of southern England was a part. (TV: ) In the 40th century, this was the capital of Earth. (TV: The Daleks' Master Plan (TV story))

Within both Southern Britain (PROSE: Silhouette (novel)) and Southern England, (TV: Turn Left (TV story)) London was located in the south-east of England. North-west of London was Oxford and to the north-east was the county of Essex. South of London was Brighton, to the south-west was Southampton. In 1666, (TV: The Visitation (TV story)) the City of London (PROSE: Matrix (novel), TV: The Lie of the Land (TV story)) appeared to make up the majority of London as a whole. The urban sprawl of the city was surrounded to the north-east and north-west by what appeared to be open countryside. The only bridge across the River Thames (TV: The Visitation (TV story)) between the City and Southwark (TV: The Lie of the Land (TV story)) appeared to be London Bridge, (TV: The Visitation (TV story), TV: The Lie of the Land (TV story)) which had existed since at least the 15th century. (PROSE: , Revenge of the Slitheen (TV story)) Districts of the East End, such as Limehouse, (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang (TV story)) were now part of East London, (PROSE: ) which, by the 2000s, appeared to stretch as far as the boroughs of Barking and Bexley. == Parallel universes ==
| |||
London existed in several parallel universes.
In a reality that the Tenth Doctor dubbed "Pete's World", London was far more technologically advanced than its counterpart, though it had army curfews and checkpoints for lower income areas. When the Doctor arrived, he explored with Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith, discovering that Cybus Industries had birthed a new Cyber-subspecies. (TV: Rise of the Cybermen (TV story)) This London was briefly taken over by these new Cybermen before the Doctor and Mickey disabled their emotional inhibitors, allowing the Preachers to mount a successful campgain against them. (TV: The Age of Steel (TV story))
When Rose tried to return to the Doctor's universe from Pete's World, she wound up in the Londons of various parallel universes. The first froze over when this reality's Sol fell victim to the reality bomb and later fell to rioting. (AUDIO: The Endless Night (audio story)) The second, much less technologically advanced than in the Doctor's universe, suffered constant rain due to global warming, a situation suspected to have been engineered by aliens. (AUDIO: The Flood (RTDC audio story)) In the third, the consciousness of deceased humans was uploaded into machines. (AUDIO: Ghost Machines (audio story)) The fourth Earth faced impending destruction at the hands of planetoid EK56, with the citizens choosing to spend their last days partying. From what Rose could discover, these alternate Londons had not faced the invasions of its counterpart had nor had a version of the Doctor visited. (AUDIO: The Last Party on Earth (audio story))
In the Unbound Universe, London had suffered greatly due to the absence of the Doctor during the 1970s and 1980s. Bereft of their scientific advisor, UNIT employed more destructive methods to combat the alien incursions. To stop the Silurians, Mike Yates travelled back in time and detonated forty nuclear warhead to destroy them before they could awaken, creating a large crater in the middle of the city. (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil (audio story))
== Behind the scenes == | |||
Throughout seasons one to twenty-six, filming for Doctor Who took place primarily in London at the BBC Television Centre. This was largely a result of the BBC being based there. Due to the order of filming it was Ghost Light, not Survival, that was the last story filmed in BBC Television Centre. Any future work done there was irregular. With the reinvention of the series in 2005, production was handed over to BBC Wales and moved to Cardiff, the Welsh capital.

London, also known as London Town (TV: The Wedding of River Song [+]Loading...["The Wedding of River Song (TV story)"]) and London City, (AUDIO: Faustian [+]Loading...["Faustian (audio story)"], etc.) was the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It was a prominent city on Earth and was invaded by aliens many times. With the help of the Doctor, the invasions were repelled. Organisations such as UNIT, Torchwood One, MI5, MI6 and the Department also assisted in the defence of the city.

Parallel universes[[edit] | [edit source]]
Information in this section to be moved to London/Other realities subpage.
(TV: Rise of the Cybermen [+]Loading...["Rise of the Cybermen (TV story)"]) This London was briefly taken over by these new Cybermen before the Doctor and Mickey disabled their emotional inhibitors, allowing the Preachers to mount a successful campgain against them. (TV: The Age of Steel [+]Loading...["The Age of Steel (TV story)"])
When Rose tried to return to the Doctor's universe from Pete's World, she wound up in the Londons of various parallel universes. The first froze over when this reality's Sol fell victim to the reality bomb and later fell to rioting. (AUDIO: The Endless Night [+]Loading...["The Endless Night (audio story)"]) The second, much less technologically advanced than in the Doctor's universe, suffered constant rain due to global warming, a situation suspected to have been engineered by aliens. (AUDIO: The Flood [+]Loading...["The Flood (RTDC audio story)"]) In the third, the consciousness of deceased humans was uploaded into machines. (AUDIO: Ghost Machines [+]Loading...["Ghost Machines (audio story)"]) The fourth Earth faced impending destruction at the hands of planetoid EK56, with the citizens choosing to spend their last days partying. From what Rose could discover, these alternate Londons had not faced the invasions of its counterpart had nor had a version of the Doctor visited. (AUDIO: The Last Party on Earth [+]Loading...["The Last Party on Earth (audio story)"])
(AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil [+]Loading...["Sympathy for the Devil (audio story)"])
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
Throughout seasons one to twenty-six, filming for Doctor Who took place primarily in London at the BBC Television Centre. This was largely a result of the BBC being based there. Due to the order of filming it was Ghost Light, not Survival, that was the last story filmed in BBC Television Centre. Any future work done there was irregular. With the reinvention of the series in 2005, production was handed over to BBC Wales and moved to Cardiff, the Welsh capital.
Location information
Though it's possible that a real world location doesn't exist in the same geographic space in the Doctor Who universe, such cases are few and far between. Thus, the map to the right is probably a good indicator of the DWU location of London.
Other matters[[edit] | [edit source]]
Shouldn't this "Earth-Skaro Timescale" be a valid source?
- According to the "Earth-Skaro Timescale" of Terry Nation's Dalek Annual 1976, London was believed to have been founded in the Earth year 42.
- In the unproduced film The Dark Dimension, London was to have been subjected to an alien invasion, brought forth by Prime Minister Oliver Hawkspur, by numerous species including the Daleks and the Cybermen.
