The name London came from the Latin name Londinium. The city was founded by the Roman Empire during their rule over the island, which they conquered in 43. In June 1780, Lord James Gordon led a group of followers into the British House of Commons and held the leading politicians of the country hostage. The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations was held in London in 1851. It was based in a purpose-built venue called the Crystal Palace. The Fifth Doctor wanted to take Nyssa and Tegan Jovanka to the Exhibition as "a treat" in the wake of Adric's death, but instead ended up on the tarmac of Heathrow Airport in 1982. On 27 July 2012, the 2012 Summer Olympics opened in London during a period of unseasonably cold weather in the city, caused by an Isolus pod draining all the nearby heat. The Tenth Doctor, his TARDIS and people inside the Olympic Stadium were all among those placed inside drawings made by Chloe Webber, aided by an Isolus to give the stranded Isolus a family. Digging up the pod, Rose threw it into the Olympic Flame to heat it up, resulting in the Isolus releasing those it had kidnapped. Due to an injured runner during the torch relay route, the Olympic Flame was lit at the opening ceremonies by the Doctor, who appeared on international television. The morale of the Games allowed the Isolus to fly home. Afterward, the Doctor and Rose attended a neighbourhood celebration in London. By this time, the Torchwood Institute seemed to have been relatively well-known, enough that the Battle of Canary Wharf of several years earlier was now known as the "Battle of Torchwood". London existed in several parallel universes.

In a reality that the Tenth Doctor dubbed "Pete's World", London was far more technologically advanced than its counterpart, though it had army curfews and checkpoints for lower income areas. When the Doctor arrived, he explored with Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith, discovering that Cybus Industries had birthed a new Cyber-subspecies. (TV: Rise of the Cybermen [+]Loading...["Rise of the Cybermen (TV story)"]) This London was briefly taken over by these new Cybermen before the Doctor and Mickey disabled their emotional inhibitors, allowing the Preachers to mount a successful campgain against them. (TV: The Age of Steel [+]Loading...["The Age of Steel (TV story)"])

When Rose tried to return to the Doctor's universe from Pete's World, she wound up in the Londons of various parallel universes. The first froze over when this reality's Sol fell victim to the reality bomb and later fell to rioting. (AUDIO: The Endless Night [+]Loading...["The Endless Night (audio story)"]) The second, much less technologically advanced than in the Doctor's universe, suffered constant rain due to global warming, a situation suspected to have been engineered by aliens. (AUDIO: Ghost Machines [+]Loading...["Ghost Machines (audio story)"]) The fourth Earth faced impending destruction at the hands of planetoid EK56, with the citizens choosing to spend their last days partying. From what Rose could discover, these alternate Londons had not faced the invasions of its counterpart had nor had a version of the Doctor visited. In the Unbound Universe, London had suffered greatly due to the absence of the Doctor during the 1970s and 1980s. Bereft of their scientific advisor, UNIT employed more destructive methods to combat the alien incursions. To stop the Silurians, Mike Yates travelled back in time and detonated forty nuclear warhead to destroy them before they could awaken, creating a large crater in the middle of the city. Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

Throughout seasons one to twenty-six, filming for Doctor Who took place primarily in London at the BBC Television Centre. This was largely a result of the BBC being based there. Due to the order of filming it was Ghost Light, not Survival, that was the last story filmed in BBC Television Centre. Any future work done there was irregular. With the reinvention of the series in 2005, production was handed over to BBC Wales and moved to Cardiff, the Welsh capital.
