The name London came from the Latin name Londinium, the city having been founded by the Romans during their reign over the island. Barbara Wright's casual mention of coming from Londinium during a visit to Rome in the year 64 led to her and Ian Chesterton being abducted and sold into slavery, as the recently conquered Britons were not, at that time, Roman citizens. London, also known as London Town (TV: The Wedding of River Song (TV story)) and London City, (AUDIO: Faustian (audio story), etc.) was the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It was a prominent city on Earth and was invaded by aliens many times. With the help of the Doctor, the invasions were repelled. Organisations such as UNIT, Torchwood One, MI5, MI6 and the Department also assisted in the defence of the city.

The city was founded as Londinium. (TV: The Romans (TV story)) By the 28th century, it had become part of the sprawling Central City, and by the 30th century, it had evolved into Spaceport Five Overcity, a hovering metropolis above the old London, now a slum called Spaceport Five Undertown. (PROSE: Original Sin (novel)) The Tenth Doctor believed London to be the "most exciting city in the world", (AUDIO: Technophobia (audio story)) while the Twelfth Doctor, conversely, thought it was "a dump". (TV: The Zygon Inversion (TV story)) Miss Multravers assessed it as the most populous and advanced city on the planet. (AUDIO: The Haunting (audio story))

During Boudica's revolt against the occupying Roman forces in 60, she burnt the Roman capital Camolundunum before her army marched to Londinium and slaughtered almost everyone in the city. (AUDIO: The Wrath of the Iceni (audio story)) London became the capital city of England. (TV: )

Sometime between the 13th and early 17th century, the Houses of Parliament were built. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot (video game)) Also known as the Palace of Westminster, (PROSE: The Book of the War (novel)) Parliament was home to the two houses of England's, later the United Kingdom's, legislature: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Parliament ratified laws and gave assent to British monarch if they wished to raise taxes. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot (video game))

It was the home to the British monarchy, who resided at Buckingham Palace. (TV: Voyage of the Damned (TV story)) The British government was based in London and met in the Houses of Parliament. (TV: Aliens of London (TV story)) The city would eventually be absorbed into Central City, of which the whole of southern England was a part. (TV: ) In the 40th century, this was the capital of Earth. (TV: The Daleks' Master Plan (TV story))

Geography
Within both Southern Britain (PROSE: Silhouette (novel)) and Southern England, (TV: Turn Left (TV story)) London was located in the south-east of England. North-west of London was Oxford and to the north-east was the county of Essex. South of London was Brighton, to the south-west was Southampton. (TV: Spyfall (TV story)) The prime meridian, an imaginary line which divided the Earth vertically into the Western and Eastern Hemispheres, ran through Greenwich in London. (TV: Fear Her (TV story))

In 1666, (TV: The Visitation (TV story)) the City of London (PROSE: Matrix (novel), TV: The Lie of the Land (TV story)) appeared to make up the majority of London as a whole. The urban sprawl of the city was surrounded to the north-east and north-west by what appeared to be open countryside. The only bridge across the River Thames (TV: The Visitation (TV story)) between the City and Southwark (TV: The Lie of the Land (TV story)) appeared to be London Bridge, (TV: The Visitation (TV story), TV: The Lie of the Land (TV story)) which had existed since at least the 15th century. (AUDIO: The Doctor's Tale (audio story)) Most of the medieval city of London was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. (PROSE: A History of Humankind (novel))

By the 19th century, regions of London included the East End (PROSE: The Pit (novel)) and the West End. (AUDIO: Jago in Love (audio story), The Hourglass Killers (audio story))

At the start of the 21st century, the wider London area was referred to as Greater London, (TV: Partners in Crime (TV story), PROSE: ) which was made up of several boroughs. (PROSE: , Revenge of the Slitheen (TV story)) Districts of the East End, such as Limehouse, (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang (TV story)) were now part of East London, (PROSE: ) which, by the 2000s, appeared to stretch as far as the boroughs of Barking and Bexley. West London appeared to stretch as far as the borough of Hillingdon. (TV: Revenge of the Slitheen (TV story))

Early history
The Sontarans attempted to choke all life on Earth with the newly introduced ATMOS in order to create a hatchery that would increase their troop production for the Rutan-Sontaran War. They were thwarted by the combined efforts of the Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, and Martha Jones. Luke Rattigan destroyed their ship. The epicentre of the Sontaran invasion was the ATMOS factory in London. (TV: The Sontaran Stratagem (TV story) / The Poison Sky (TV story))
In 1666, the Great Fire of London swept through and destroyed a large part of the City of London, caused by the destruction of a Terileptil base. (DW: The Visitation)

London was one of the many places attacked by the New Dalek Empire after relocating Earth to the Medusa Cascade. (TV: The Stolen Earth (TV story))

On 14th September 1752, the standard dating system in the British Empire shifted from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, as a result of which, it lost eleven days. Thereafter, the Eleven-Day Empire used a shadow version of London as their capital.
During Easter,See Aliens of London dating controversy. a wormhole measuring nearly 10 kilometres high appeared in a tunnel in London. It led to the planet San Helios. London was evacuated several times during the late 20th century, most notably during the activities of Operation Golden Age where it remained mostly unoccupied, aside from UNIT and scattered looters (DW: Invasion of the Dinosaurs); however little lasting damage to the city occurred during these evacuations. Specific locations and landmarks featuring in twentieth century events included the Post Office Tower (DW The War Machines the London Underground (especially Goodge Street Station) (DW The Web of Fear), Saint Paul's Cathedral (DW The Invasion) and Heathrow Airport (DW Time-Flight).

21st century
The Mona Lisa was in the International Gallery in London, on loan from the Louvre. Due to her proximity to The Abomination, made from the same sentient paint as the Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa was brought to life. She returned to her painting when she was tricked into bringing a sketch of K9 to life, who shot at The Abomination. (TV: Mona Lisa's Revenge (TV story))
By the early 21st century a surprisingly large number of London landmarks had secret bases of either human or alien origin located beneath them. The London Eye was integral to the plans of the Nestene Consciousness to invade in 2005 (DW: Rose). The Tower of London, was a UNIT command centre (DW: The Christmas Invasion).

Canary Wharf housed the Torchwood One tower, which the Institute had constructed in order to study a mysterious phenomena (actually an entrance into the Void) five hundred feet above the city. The Institute built a skyscraper in order to investigate it (DW: Army of Ghosts/Doomsday).
A fast-growing strain of Rakweed spread its spores across London, releasing spores that put everyone in the city into a coma so the Slitheen-Blathereen family could harvest the plant for profit. Mr Smith used a high-pitched frequency across London to kill the plants before they spread beyond London. Tree and Leef Slitheen-Blathereen, their stomachs filled to the brim with Rakweed, were also destroyed by this noise after they threatened Sarah Jane Smith. (TV: The Gift (TV story))

The Institute also maintained an installation at the Thames Flood Barrier which was later taken over by the Empress of the Racnoss. (DW: The Runaway Bride)
In 2009, the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory visited London. (PROSE: Snowfall (novel))

On a smaller scale, a suburban home on Bannerman Road served as an informal base for the home's owner, Sarah Jane Smith for the investigation of alien activities on Earth. (SJA: Invasion of the Bane)
During Christmas in the 2000s, Simm was resurrected on Earth, and used the Immortality Gate to convert every human being into a version of himself. The Time Lords, led by Rassilon, used the drumbeat within the Master's head and a White-Point Star to break through the time-lock and escape the Time War. They planned to erase all of creation in order to ascend to a higher form of existence. They crossed through the gate, arriving in the mansion of Joshua Naismith in London. They were defeated by the Tenth Doctor and the Master. (TV: The End of Time (TV story))

In 2096, following the devastating Myloki conflict of the 2060s, London was ravaged and poverty stricken, and a paramilitary force called the City Militia imposed a brutal order on East London. The City of London, owned by the world's remaining banks, was relatively stable but operated on a caste-system based around slavery. The clandestine SILHOET organisation maintained a covert HQ in the old British Film and Television Corporation building. (PDA: The Indestructible Man)
2010s
In 2010, the Tenth Doctor fought the Krillitanes in London. (PROSE: Code of the Krillitanes (novel)) In the same year, he and his companions Heather McCrimmon and Wolfgang Ryter fought the Bacothormeon in the city. (COMIC: The Genius Trap (comic story))

The city was largely abandoned during the 22nd century Dalek invasion. (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth, EDA: Alien Bodies)

In 2011, the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn Smythe arrived in London to visit the Tower of London but were attacked and chased by a Terravore through the River Thames. They were both arrested by the Metropolitan Police Service but were freed and assisted Detective Inspector Patricia Menzies in stopping the Terravore invasion. (AUDIO: The Crimes of Thomas Brewster)

By the 28th century, London was known as Central City and covered most of southern England. (DW: The Sensorites, The Daleks' Master Plan)
Also in 2011, the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory fought the Virtuals in London. (COMIC: Sound Bytes (comic story))

:The name as well as the importance of some of the activities there, implied it had by then become the capital of Earth and by extension, the Sol system.
In 2011, the Koggnossenti launched an invasion of London. They began emitting a signal which devolved the brains of all intelligent non-Koggnossenti life. For a few hours, London was transformed into a ghost town, with 98.2% of the population reduced to a primitive technology fearing state. The Tenth Doctor reversed the signal unto the Koggnossenti, forcing them to leave Earth. Those affected by the signal did not retain any memories of the invasion. (AUDIO: Technophobia (audio story))

In 4039, many prominent London landmarks, such as Big Ben, still existed for a while prior to their destruction by the invading Graxnix, and the city again went by the name of London, rather than Central City. (DWM: Hotel Historia)
On 27 July 2012, the 2012 Summer Olympics opened in London during a period of unseasonably cold weather in the city, caused by an Isolus pod draining all the nearby heat. The Tenth Doctor, his TARDIS and people inside the Olympic Stadium were all among those placed inside drawings made by Chloe Webber, aided by an Isolus to give the stranded Isolus a family. Digging up the pod, Rose threw it into the Olympic Flame to heat it up, resulting in the Isolus releasing those it had kidnapped. Due to an injured runner during the torch relay route, the Olympic Flame was lit at the opening ceremonies by the Doctor, who appeared on international television. The morale of the Games allowed the Isolus to fly home. Afterward, the Doctor and Rose attended a neighbourhood celebration in London. By this time, the Torchwood Institute seemed to have been relatively well-known, enough that the Battle of Canary Wharf of several years earlier was now known as the "Battle of Torchwood". (TV: Fear Her (TV story))

Notable events
Somewhere around the same time, the Eleventh Doctor and Amy met an athlete who was on the run from a Weeping Angel who was trying to steal the Olympic Flame in order to ruin the spirit of the Olympics, and ended up in the TARDIS. The Angel took the torch with the flame, but the Doctor destroyed the Angel with his screwdriver and received a gold medal for saving the Olympics. (TV: Good as Gold (TV story))

Parallel universes
London existed in several parallel universes.

In a reality that the Tenth Doctor dubbed "Pete's World", London was far more technologically advanced than its counterpart, though it had army curfews and checkpoints for lower income areas. When the Doctor arrived, he explored with Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith, discovering that Cybus Industries had birthed a new Cyber-subspecies. (TV: Rise of the Cybermen (TV story)) This London was briefly taken over by these new Cybermen before the Doctor and Mickey disabled their emotional inhibitors, allowing the Preachers to mount a successful campgain against them. (TV: The Age of Steel (TV story))

When Rose tried to return to the Doctor's universe from Pete's World, she wound up in the Londons of various parallel universes. The first froze over when this reality's Sol fell victim to the reality bomb and later fell to rioting. (AUDIO: The Endless Night (audio story)) The second, much less technologically advanced than in the Doctor's universe, suffered constant rain due to global warming, a situation suspected to have been engineered by aliens. (AUDIO: The Flood (RTDC audio story)) In the third, the consciousness of deceased humans was uploaded into machines. (AUDIO: Ghost Machines (audio story)) The fourth Earth faced impending destruction at the hands of planetoid EK56, with the citizens choosing to spend their last days partying. From what Rose could discover, these alternate Londons had not faced the invasions of its counterpart had nor had a version of the Doctor visited. (AUDIO: The Last Party on Earth (audio story))

In the Unbound Universe, London had suffered greatly due to the absence of the Doctor during the 1970s and 1980s. Bereft of their scientific advisor, UNIT employed more destructive methods to combat the alien incursions. To stop the Silurians, Mike Yates travelled back in time and detonated forty nuclear warhead to destroy them before they could awaken, creating a large crater in the middle of the city. (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil (audio story))

Behind the scenes
Throughout seasons one to twenty-six, filming for Doctor Who took place primarily in London at the BBC Television Centre. This was largely a result of the BBC being based there. Due to the order of filming it was Ghost Light, not Survival, that was the last story filmed in BBC Television Centre. Any future work done there was irregular. With the reinvention of the series in 2005, production was handed over to BBC Wales and moved to Cardiff, the Welsh capital.

This article needs a big cleanup.

See talk page for details. Creation of century pages in progress to alleviate pressure on this page. This page will then require cleanup to better reflect the whole history of London, as a number of sections on this page - including the infobox - are predominantly focused on 21st century London.

These problems might be so great that the article's factual accuracy has been compromised. Talk about it here or check the revision history or Manual of Style for more information.

Prehistory[[edit] | [edit source]]

In Vastra's home era, a Silurian city already existed where London would later be built. What would later become Hyde Park was considered "a bad part of town". (GAME: Lost in Time [+]Loading...["Lost in Time (video game)"]) As a result, when the Silurians went into their million-year-long hibernation, at least two hibernation facilities were built under what would become London. (AUDIO: The Wrath of the Iceni [+]Loading...["The Wrath of the Iceni (audio story)"])

Barbara Wright's casual mention of coming from Londinium during a visit to Rome in the year 64 led to her and Ian Chesterton being abducted and sold into slavery, as the recently conquered Britons were not then Roman citizens. Parallel universes[[edit] | [edit source]]

This section needs a cleanup.

Information in this section to be moved to London/Other realities subpage.

(TV: Rise of the Cybermen [+]Loading...["Rise of the Cybermen (TV story)"]) This London was briefly taken over by these new Cybermen before the Doctor and Mickey disabled their emotional inhibitors, allowing the Preachers to mount a successful campgain against them. (TV: The Age of Steel [+]Loading...["The Age of Steel (TV story)"])

When Rose tried to return to the Doctor's universe from Pete's World, she wound up in the Londons of various parallel universes. The first froze over when this reality's Sol fell victim to the reality bomb and later fell to rioting. (AUDIO: The Endless Night [+]Loading...["The Endless Night (audio story)"]) The second, much less technologically advanced than in the Doctor's universe, suffered constant rain due to global warming, a situation suspected to have been engineered by aliens. (AUDIO: The Flood [+]Loading...["The Flood (RTDC audio story)"]) In the third, the consciousness of deceased humans was uploaded into machines. (AUDIO: Ghost Machines [+]Loading...["Ghost Machines (audio story)"]) The fourth Earth faced impending destruction at the hands of planetoid EK56, with the citizens choosing to spend their last days partying. From what Rose could discover, these alternate Londons had not faced the invasions of its counterpart had nor had a version of the Doctor visited. (AUDIO: The Last Party on Earth [+]Loading...["The Last Party on Earth (audio story)"])

(AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil [+]Loading...["Sympathy for the Devil (audio story)"])

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

Throughout seasons one to twenty-six, filming for Doctor Who took place primarily in London at the BBC Television Centre. This was largely a result of the BBC being based there. Due to the order of filming it was Ghost Light, not Survival, that was the last story filmed in BBC Television Centre. Any future work done there was irregular. With the reinvention of the series in 2005, production was handed over to BBC Wales and moved to Cardiff, the Welsh capital.

Though it's possible that a real world location doesn't exist in the same geographic space in the Doctor Who universe, such cases are few and far between. Thus, the map to the right is probably a good indicator of the DWU location of London.
