Before editing this page, please read T:RUMOUR and T:OOU SRC. Fan sites, videos and blogs are not valid sources for this article. Also cast and crew announcements need to be handled in a particular way.
Please also remember to directly quote people, or to exactly characterise their statements. Do not say that someone said something when they really didn't. Work from original quotes — not a paraphrasing of them. When it comes to anything Russell T Davies, Jane Tranter, Julie Gardner, another exec, or any major star of the show says, give their exact quote only. Remember, a part of the production team's job is to tell the truth, but only very narrowly. So this page should contain only what they exactly say.
The War Between the Land and the Sea was a spin-off television series produced by the BBC in collaboration with Sony's Bad Wolf and Disney Branded Television for streaming on Disney+.
The spinoff was described by Russell T Davies as centring on the Sea Devils as they "wake up and see the state of the oceans that we have put them in."[1]
Overview
Early announcements
On 8 December 2022, Doctor Who Magazine #585 was released, in which Russell T Davies teased an "eight-word title" in his Letter from the Showrunner, and promised "Big news soon."[2]
On 27 April 2023, Doctor Who Magazine #590 was released, in which it was revealed in the Production Diary that Davies, Scott Handcock and Joel Collins had "an eight-word-title meeting" on 14 March 2023.[source needed]
On 7 December 2023, Doctor Who Magazine #598 was released, in which Davies clarified that the item had "been a bit delayed", promising that "the reveal of those eight words" would come "any month now".[3] In the Production Diary column, it was noted that a script was delivered on 30 October 2023.[source needed]
Davies then further alluded to the pre-production existence of the spinoff, saying to The Times in May 2024 that "There are offices that exist now for that."[4]
The title was rumoured long before the official announcement, with the phrase "the war between the land and the sea" notably spoken word-for-word by the Fifteenth Doctor in the Season 1 episode 73 Yards.[5]
History
The spin-off was officially confirmed simultaneously on 26 July 2024 via official social channels[6] and a panel at San Diego Comic Con. Russell also clarified that stars Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw were not returning as their previous characters,[1] Alonso Frame and Tish Jones.
