The War Between the Land and the Sea, also known as The War Between, is a spin-off television series produced by the BBC in collaboration with Sony's Bad Wolf and Disney Branded Television for streaming on Disney+.

The spin-off, also internally abbreviated to TWB,[1] was described by Russell T Davies as centring on the Sea Devils as they "wake up and see the state of the oceans that we have put them in."[2]

Overview[[edit] | [edit source]]

Early announcements[[edit] | [edit source]]

On 8 December 2022, Doctor Who Magazine #585 was released, in which Russell T Davies teased an "eight-word title" in his Letter from the Showrunner, and promised "Big news soon."[3]

On 27 April 2023, Doctor Who Magazine #590 was released, in which it was revealed in the Production Diary that Davies, Scott Handcock and Joel Collins had "an eight-word-title meeting" on 14 March 2023.[source needed]

On 27 November 2023, it was reported by The Mirror that a Sea Devil spin-off series was being worked on, scheduled for filming in spring 2024.[4]

On 7 December 2023, Doctor Who Magazine #598 was released, in which Davies clarified that the item had "been a bit delayed", promising that "the reveal of those eight words" would come "any month now".[5] In the Production Diary column, it was noted that a script was delivered on 30 October 2023.[source needed]

On 26 December 2023 the spin-off was added to "Production List" with a filming date of 4 March 2024.[6]

On 8 May 2024, Davies alluded to the pre-production existence of the spin-off, saying to The Times that "There are offices that exist now for that".[7]

The spin-off was officially announced on 26 July 2024 simultaneously in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con and on the official Doctor Who social media channels.[10][11] Davies also clarified that leads Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw were not returning as their previous characters, Alonso Frame and Tish Jones.[2]

On 8 August, the novelisation [+]Loading...{"noital":"1","1":"73 Yards (novelisation)","2":"the novelisation"} of 73 Yards was released, in which the first chapter was titled "The Land and the Sea".[12]

On 15 August, Doctor Who Magazine #607 was released, in which the miniseries was stated to be coming "next year".[13]
