This page lists appearances of the Second Doctor in the order in which he experienced them. This timeline is based on observations of the Doctor Who universe and the events in each of these stories. From these observations we have attempted to build a concise timeline. There are also many gaps between stories.

The layout of this timeline is based in part on the observations on Doctor Who Reference Guide and Doctor Who - The Complete Adventures, Lance Parkin's AHistory and other sources that allow us to make observations, such as DocOhoReviews, Doc Oho's Book Reviews, The History of Doctor Who, The Discontinuity Guide, Clive Banks Database, Whopix, the Big Finish forums, The Whoniverse and the Divergent Universe forums. None of these sources should be used solely as a source or considered a "true" timeline for stories.

Limiting factors

Companions

Any story featuring only Ben Jackson and Polly Wright must take place before TV: The Highlanders; any story featuring Jamie McCrimmon must take place after TV: The Highlanders. Any story with Victoria Waterfield must take place after TV: The Evil of the Daleks and before TV: Fury from the Deep. Any story with Zoe Heriot must be set during or after TV: The Wheel in Space and before TV: The War Games.

A lot of stories are often said to occur during Season 6B, a fan-opined spot on the timeline after the Doctor's trial on Gallifrey in The War Games, as the Second Doctor is not seen regenerating into his third incarnation in that serial. Thus it is possible to imagine, as TV Comic writers and Terrance Dicks did, that the Second Doctor survived for an unspecified period of time after The War Games. It was not until 1999 with the publication of PROSE: Players that Season 6B was confirmed as fact instead of pure conjecture.

TV Comics placement

The Second Doctor's travels with John and Gillian are very problematic to place in the Doctor's timeline, as they are inexplicably travelling with him by The Extortioner, with no explanation given as to how this relate to their travels with the First Doctor. A possibility emerges, unintentionally, in The Nameless City, where the Doctor has not seen the Master in a long time, but Jamie doesn't know the Doctor's origins, meaning it cannot be set in Season 6b, but must come after The Dark Path. Thus there is a gap between the events of The Dark Path and The Nameless City, without Jamie, which is perfectly placed by the John and Gillian travels.

The stories Conundrum and The Land of Happy Endings hypothesise that these adventures are either stories created by The Master of the Land of Fiction or the Doctor's dreams.

Timeline

Previous page: First Doctor

A new body

The Doctor regenerates from his previous incarnation.
Set immediately after The Tenth Planet, with the Doctor adjusting to his new body as he faces the Daleks on Vulcan. Ben and Polly encounter the Daleks for the first time, though they had already been told of them beforehand. While Polly instantly believes him to still be the Doctor, Ben remains more skeptical on his identity, though he is convinced he is still the Doctor when the Daleks identity him.

New adventures with Ben and Polly

Set shortly after The Power of the Daleks, with Ben fully accepting the Doctor's renewal.
The Doctor's memory is still hazy after his recent regeneration, setting this shortly after The Power of the Daleks.
No explanations are given for Ben and Polly's absence.
References are made to the Doctor's recent regeneration, setting this shortly after The Power of the Daleks.
The Doctor claims this is the first time the TARDIS has ever managed a short hop.
Three weeks have passed since The Power of the Daleks.
The Doctor creates a temporary sonic device, and resolves to begin work on a permanent version when he gets back to the TARDIS, leading to the creation of the sonic screwdriver.
The Doctor says that he has not been in America for some time, setting this before Wonderland, and Ben and Polly are now well adjusted to him.

Joined by Jamie

During a visit to 1746 Scotland, the Doctor, Ben and Polly meet highlander piper Jamie McCrimmon, who they invite aboard the TARDIS so he can escape the redcoats.
Set immediately after The Highlanders, with Jamie marvelling at the sight of the TARDIS interior before the TARDIS crew arrive at Atlantis. After they flood Atlantis to stop Professor Zaroff destroying Earth, the Doctor sets a course to visit Mars, leading directly into The Moonbase.
Rather than Mars, the TARDIS instead lands on the Moon in 2070, where the crew help prevent the Cybermen from seizing the Moonbase. As they depart, the Doctor uses the TARDIS' time scanner to see their next destination, leading directly into The Macra Terror.
In an alternate timeline created by Rassilon and the Cybermen, the Doctor is partially converted into a Cyberman during the events of The Moonbase: Episode 2.
Polly has her hair cut into a bob-style.
Ben and Polly are showing Jamie around the inside of the TARDIS, setting this early in his travels.
The Doctor begins to teach his companions how to pilot the TARDIS, but they end up fighting the Yes Men in New Houston when he takes back control.
The Doctor recalls the events of The Yes Men. Polly still has short hair, setting this shortly after The Macra Terror, but it apparently regrows to its old lengthen by the time they leave the "English village".

Final adventures with Ben and Polly

Jamie is still having difficulty acclimatising to time travel, and Ben and Polly bring him up to date with the history of the United Kingdom after his own time, setting this early in his travels. Ben and Polly appear to return to London for the first time since The War Machines, albeit in a time long before their own.
Set between The Macra Terror and The Faceless Ones.[1] The Doctor has still only recently regenerated. Polly doesn't know about the TARDIS' translation circuit, and also doesn't appear to have much experience travelling to Earth's recent history.
Jamie and Ben refer to the events of Resistance. Jamie meets the Selachians for the first time.
Polly recalls the events of Resistance, while Jamie refers to the events of the The Selachian Gambit.
The TARDIS has "finally" found its way back to England, suggesting that the TARDIS crew have not been there for a while, and that the story is set before The Morton Legacy.
Ben, Polly and Jamie wish to learn more about piloting the TARDIS, but the Doctor is reluctant to teach them after their last attempt resulted in the adventure in New Houston, setting this after The Yes Men.
Polly is used to seeing history, but not that of London, despite her previous visits in The Feast and The Roundheads.

The Human Factor incident

By this point, Polly's hair has regrown to it's old length, setting this long after The Macra Terror. Arriving at Gatwick Airport, the Doctor foils a Chemeleon plot to replace humanity. When they realise they have landed on the same day they left in the TARDIS, Ben and Polly decide to remain behind. After they say their goodbyes, the Doctor and Jamie realise that the TARDIS has been stolen, leading directly into The Evil of the Daleks.
The Doctor and Jamie trace the TARDIS to Edward Waterfield, a man who time travelled from 1866 under the orders of the Daleks to trap the Doctor in return for the safety of his daughter, Victoria. The Dalek Emperor forces the Doctor to inject them with the Human Factor so they can isolate the Dalek Factor, but the Doctor's Humanised Daleks begin a battle with the Emperor's Daleks on Skaro, seemingly resulting in "the final end" of the Daleks. Waterfield dies protecting the Doctor from the Daleks, but not before making him promise to look after his daughter, causing the Doctor to take on Victoria as a companion to honour his promise.
(PROLOGUE)
As they leave Skaro, the Doctor and Jamie introduce Victoria to the TARDIS, and the Doctor tells her that he is "around 450-years-old" in Earth terms. As he takes her to find a change of clothes, Jamie tells the Doctor to try " a smooth take off" to keep from frightening Victoria. (TV: The Tomb of the Cybermen)
While Victoria sleeps in the TARDIS, the Doctor and Jamie take a quick trip to Tersimmon, where they encounter the Daleks again, despite believing to have just seen their "final end", with the Doctor still troubled by his part in the apparent genocide, setting this almost immediately after The Evil of the Daleks.

Early adventures with Victoria

For her first trip, the Doctor and Jamie end up taking Victoria to Telos, just in time to stop the Brotherhood of Logicians from freeing the CyberTelosians from their cyber-tombs.
Set in an aborted timeline during The Tomb of the Cybermen: Episode 1, when Jamie and Peter Hayden entered the weapons testing room.
While authorial intent places this between The Web of Fear and Fury from the Deep [2], Victoria is still very new to seeing other time periods. The Doctor also gives Victoria a brief talk regarding the extraordinary nature of her new life as a time traveller, echoing the conversation that they had in The Tomb of the Cybermen.
The Doctor has not encountered a Yeti of any kind before, setting this before The Abominable Snowmen.
The Doctor meets Professor Edward Travers and faces the Great Intelligence and the Robot Yetis for the first time at the Det-Sen Monastery in Tibet. The events of The Tomb of the Cybermen are still fresh in Jamie's thoughts.[quote 1]
Jamie initially thinks that the TARDIS has only landed further up the Tibetan mountain, setting this immediately after The Abominable Snowmen.[quote 2] The Doctor faces the Ice Warriors for the first time.
Set during The Ice Warriors: Episode 6, just after the Doctor disabled the Ice Warrior's sonic cannon.

Missions with Jamie

The TARDIS console room is still a mess from the previous landing in The Ice Warriors. Meeting another Time Lord called Pavo, the Doctor and Jamie are asked to visit Joinson Dastari, while Victoria decides to remain with Pavo to study graphology. The Doctor is given a Stattenheim remote control.

The Doctor and Jamie almost visit Space Station Camera, but leave immediately upon seeing the Sontarans attacking. (AUDIO: The Black Hole)[3]
The Doctor has been tinkering with a Stattenheim remote control and uses it in front of Jamie for the first time, setting this before The Two Doctors. Since Jamie is not described as an adult, and considering that The Two Doctors follows directly on from World Game, with no plausible gap in between, this must occur during The Black Hole. However, Jamie is also familiar with the sonic screwdriver, suggesting a setting after Fury from the Deep, assuming he had not encountered it before having his memories wiped in The Black Hole.

Jamie wishes to get back to Victoria and "the space station" as soon as possible, setting this during The Black Hole.
After "a couple of weeks" of adventures, the Doctor and Jamie return for Victoria, and learn that "Pavo" was the Monk in disguise. After assisting the real Pavo in foiling the Monk's plan, the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria have their memories of the events erased.

Continued adventures with Jamie and Victoria

Set between The Ice Warriors and Enemy of the World, according to the back cover. The Doctor uses his new sonic screwdriver, which he had previously resolved to create in The Murder Game. The Doctor believes that he and his friends have been "frozen out" recently, suggesting a setting not long after The Ice Warriors.
The Doctor is "breaking in" his new sonic screwdriver, suggesting a setting shortly after Dreams of Empire.
Victoria has only been travelling with the Doctor for a short time.
Victoria recalls the events of The Evil of the Daleks and The Tomb of the Cybermen as being recent, but has also been travelling in the TARDIS long enough to have grown accustomed to the fact that it can travel in time and space. After a traumatic visit to 1866 London, Victoria decides that she will never return to her own time and that her home is now with the Doctor and Jamie.
Jamie tells Victoria he has not yet learned to write, setting this before Heart of TARDIS.
Victoria is teaching Jamie to read, starting with letters, suggesting a setting shortly after she learnt he couldn't write in The Lost .
The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria have just come from a disturbing adventure in Galaxy G.
The Doctor is traveling with Victoria, and Jamie's absence goes unexplained.
The Doctor still feels "new" to his body. Jamie has learned to write in English, albeit not very well, setting this after The Lost. Victoria has been travelling in the TARDIS for several weeks by now.
The Doctor refers to the tropical beach as "a welcome change", setting this before The Enemy of the World.
Set between The Ice Warriors and The Enemy of the World, according to the author's notes.
The Doctor is currently travelling with Jamie and Victoria. (DWM 475) He helps in the saving of Gallifrey on the last day of the Last Great Time War, and, in the novelisation, has a tea party with his other incarnations in the Under-Gallery as a celebration.
Victoria sees a hallucination of her deceased father for the first time, setting this before Father Figure.
The Doctor learns Venusian aikido on Venus.

The London Event

The TARDIS arrives on an Australian beach. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Apocalypse)
After the TARDIS lands in 2018 Australia, the Doctor gets caught up masquerading as his doppelgänger, Ramón Salamander, in order to topple his power regime. Once Salamander is exposed as a criminal, however, he uses his likeness of the Doctor to infiltrate the TARDIS, only to be sucked out into the Time Vortex. Jamie and Victoria see a helicopter for the first time.
Set immediately after The Enemy of the World, with the Doctor and Jamie managing to close the TARDIS doors to spare themselves from Salamander's fate. After the crew clean themselves up, the TARDIS is ensnared by the Great Intelligence and forced to land in the London Underground, where the Doctor becomes separated from Jamie and Victoria. As he maneuvers through the Underground, the Doctor has his first official meeting with Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, and is quickly reunited with Jamie, Victoria and Professor Travers, and joins with them and Travers' daughter, Anne, to combat the Intelligence in the London Event.
Set during The Web of Fear: Episode 2. Depicts the moment the Doctor met Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart.
Continues on from the ending of The Web of Fear: Episode 6.
Set shortly after The Web of Fear, as the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria have yet to leave London following the Yeti invasion.

Final adventures with Victoria

The TARDIS arrives on a "beautiful forest-world", which Victoria views as a peaceful change from "the horrors of the London Underground", setting this immediately after The Web of Fear. Victoria is aware that her time with the Doctor will soon come to an end.
Set between The Web of Fear and Fury from the Deep.[4] Upon learning that they are near Tibet, Jamie wonders if the TARDIS crew will encounter more of the Yeti, implying that the events of The Web of Fear are still fresh in his mind.

Victoria has become discontent in her travels with the Doctor and Jamie, suggesting a setting shortly before Fury from the Deep.
After seeing far too much death in her travels, Victoria privately decides that she will leave the TARDIS soon.
Victoria has been on the TARDIS for several months now, and starts thinking about leaving.
Immediately after Twilight of the Gods, the Doctor reunites with an old Time Lord friend after "200 years apart", but his friend succumbs to his inner darkness and becomes the Master. Victoria decides that she shall leave the TARDIS at their next stop on Earth, just as the TARDIS materialises in the sea, leading directly into Fury from the Deep.
Having grown tired with the instability and dangers of traveling in the TARDIS, Victoria decides to part with the Doctor and Jamie when she finds a surrogate family in 1968 England. Jamie sees the Doctor's sonic screwdriver for the fist time.[quote 3]

Solo adventures

The Doctor leaves Jamie in 1967, (COMIC: Invasion of the Quarks) most likely due to their disagreement on Victoria's departure. (TV: The Wheel in Space) All stories which have the Doctor traveling alone and with little control over the TARDIS can be set here.
The Doctor meets the Guerners on Rimba after escaping a cosmic whirlpool.
The Doctor is captured in the First Rani's time loop.
The Doctor forms a band with his first, third and fourth incarnations. He has recently started learning the pennywhistle.
The Doctor visits Vorton.

Adventures with John and Gillian

The Daleks recognise the Doctor from their encounter with him during The Power of the Daleks.
After having his future shown to him by a fortune teller, the Doctor enrolls John and Gillian at the University of Zebedee to protect them from the Quarks. He then arrives in 1960s Scotland and reunites with Jamie by happenstance, who rejoins the Doctor aboard the TARDIS after they fight off the Quarks together. The Doctor knows the Quarks by reputation only, setting this before The Dominators.

Travelling with Jamie again

All stories that feature Jamie as a young man, and which have the Doctor with little control over the TARDIS, must be set between Invasion of the Quarks and The Wheel in Space.
Jamie is still affected by Victoria's departure, setting this shortly after Fury of the Deep for him.
The Doctor addresses the whole world on television, leading him to be "known on the Earth", as would be referenced in The War Games.
The Doctor and Jamie leave a reminder for the Seventh Doctor. The Doctor has dark hair, and notes that Jamie has received an education during their travels together, implicitly setting this after Heart of TARDIS.

The Doctor knows that the Master hates him, setting this after The Dark Path. It is likely that this takes place after his travels with John and Gillian, to account for why the Doctor hasn't seen the Master for a "long time". According to Jamie, a long time has passed since The Highlanders.

Authorial intent places this between Fury from the Deep and The Wheel in Space.[5]

Joined by Zoe

As Jamie wakes up from a nap, the TARDIS lands on a rocket that takes him and the Doctor to Space Station W3, where they face off against the Cybermen. Jamie is still melancholy about Victoria's departure. The Station's astrometricist, Zoe Heriot, hides aboard the TARDIS when it departs and joins the Doctor and Jamie in their travels. The Doctor begins showing Zoe a mental projection of the events of The Evil of the Daleks.
Zoe has just finished watching the mental projection of The Evil of the Daleks, setting this immediately after The Wheel in Space. The Doctor and Zoe are then forced to project their minds as part of assassination attempt by Atrika, setting this immediately before The Dominators, where the Doctor was exhausted from projecting the mental images.
The Doctor is beginning to gain control of the TARDIS, taking it to Dulkis so he, Jamie and Zoe can have a holiday. However, they instead find themselves thwarting an invasion by the Dominators and their Quark slaves on the Island of Death. As they celebrate beating the Dominators, however, a volcano on the island erupts and the lava rapidly approaches the TARDIS.
Follows directly on from The Dominators, with the Doctor using the TARDIS' emergency unit to escape the lava, landing the ship in a White Void, with the escape from it leaving the TARDIS vulnerable to the Master of the Land of Fiction, who explodes the ship to trap the crew in the Land, though they are able to free him from the Master Brain and escape as the TARDIS rebuilds itself.
Set at an unknown point during The Mind Robber, with the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe maneuvering through the Forest of Words, aware they are surrounded by fictional characters, and Jamie lacking his fur coat but having his real face. The Doctor gives his stovepipe hat to the "famous Hat Collector".
Set immediately after The Mind Robber, with the TARDIS having just escaped the Land of Fiction,[quote 4] though it sustains some damage from both the escape and being struck by a missile.[quote 5] According to Jamie, only a few weeks have passed for him since The Web of Fear.[quote 6] The Doctor is reunited with the newly promoted Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and introduced to the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. He also meets Corporal John Benton for the first time when the Brigadier asks the TARDIS crew to help UNIT fight off a Cyberman invasion.
Set immediately after The Invasion, with the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe observing the fallout of the destruction of the Cyber-fleet before pursuing a surviving ship to Isos II.

Fixing the TARDIS

The TARDIS is being repaired from the damage sustained by its escape from the Land of Fiction, setting this shortly after The Mind Robber.
The TARDIS is being rebuilt to fix the damage from The Mind Robber, with the ship reforming around the crew.[quote 7] The Doctor returns to the Land of Fiction to retrieve his recorder, only to be recruited into the events of The Three Doctors by Goth.
The Second Doctor is brought into the Third Doctor's time stream to assist him in the First Omega Crisis. He recognises Benton specifically from The Invasion,[quote 8] and displays a more confident control over the TARDIS than he did during tenure. The Doctor is forced to sacrifice his recorder in the plan to ensure Omega's defeat.
Set after The Three Doctors, with the Doctor replacing his destroyed recorder.

A busy few weeks

Zoe is more "accustomed to breathing the canned atmosphere of the Space Wheel", setting this relatively early in her travels in the TARDIS.
The Doctor recalls the recently established UNIT, setting this shortly after The Invasion.
Zoe experiences uncertainty for the first time in her life, and Jamie notes that it has not been long since she joined the crew of the TARDIS, setting this relatively early in her travels in the TARDIS.
Zoe refers to the recent events of The Dominators and The Invasion. Jamie has been travelling with the Doctor for "years now."
Jamie recalls the TARDIS exploding, setting this after The Mind Robber. Zoe has still only just recently joined the TARDIS crew, while Jamie estimates that he has been travelling with the Doctor for "two or three" years.

Beyond War Games

Set directly after The War Games. The Doctor is plucked out of his time stream a quantum second before his forced regeneration, which from the Time Lord's perspective has already occurred. A representative of the CIA called Raven explains that he has a choice between carrying out missions on their behalf or returning to his natural time stream and living through his exile. He chooses to work with the Time Lords. The Doctor has dreams and visions of the Third Doctor's life in exile.
Set directly after The Final Beginning. The Doctor takes his first mission for the CIA with the TARDIS returned to him. The Doctor is still adjusting to not having Jamie and Zoe with him. The Doctor's sonic screwdriver is destroyed, and he resolves to build a new one with an improved design.

First mission

(PROLOGUE)
The Doctor is sent into an oubliette anteroom to await his execution after being sentenced to death by the Time Lords. However, he is visited by Sardon of the Celestial Intervention Agency, who offers him a deal to work for them in exchange for his sentence being commuted to just an exile. He agrees to their terms, but demands they allow him to make sure the soldiers from the War Games were sent home. (PROSE: World Game)
Set during World Game, with the Doctor being sent to World War II to check that his friends from the War Games have been safely sent home.
After returning from the events of Players, the Doctor is assigned his first official mission for the CIA, with Serena acting as his companion and having a TARDIS with a working chameleon circuit assigned to him when he is sent to investigate interference in Napoléon Bonaparte's history. Serena is killed during the mission, and the Doctor travels to 1816 to ensure that the interference hasn't caused serious disruption to the timeline. Rather than immediately returning to Gallifrey, the Doctor decides to remain in 1816 for a holiday.

Return trip to Gallifrey

The Doctor's hair is starting to go grey, and he is travelling alone.
The Doctor visits the Brigadier at a UNIT reunion, though he claims to be "bending" the Laws of Time to do so, where they are kidnapped by Borusa to partake in the Game of Rassilon. The Doctor remembers Jamie and Zoe's memories being wiped during The War Games, and has flecks of grey in his hair. Joining forces with his first, third and fifth incarnations, the Second Doctor watches as Rassilon deals with Borusa, and he and the Brigadier then leave Gallifrey in the TARDIS.

The Doctor returns to the Celestial Intervention Agency, though now sports grey hair brought on by the stress of his first mission. The Doctor bargains to have Jamie and his own TARDIS returned to him to ensure his silence on Serena's death, with the Time Lords also gifting him a Stattenheim remote control for his TARDIS. The Time Lords tell the Doctor that his next mission will be to Space Station Camera, where he must meet with Joinson Dastari. (PROSE: World Game)

Working with Jamie

All stories that feature Jamie as a young adult, and which has the Doctor in control of the TARDIS and able to remember afterwards, must be set during Season 6B.
The Doctor has grey hair and is working for the Time Lords, obliquely stating that his service is the "price [he] pay[s] for [his] freedom". Jamie is a young adult instead of a teenager, and believes that the Doctor has dropped off Victoria to take up graphology, though the novelisation reveals that this is a thought placed in his head by the Time Lords to explain her absence. The Doctor and Jamie have been sent to see Joinson Dastari at Space Station Camera, where the Doctor is kidnapped by Sontarans in an Androgum plot to obtain time travel, and has to be rescued by the Sixth Doctor and Peri Brown.
