Where it gets tricky is when the Second Doctor is with un-televised companions, or with Jamie alone.  A lot of these stories are often said to occur during [[Season 6B]], a fan-opined spot on the timeline after the Doctor's trial on Gallifrey in ''[[The War Games]]''. Such placement is possible because we don't ''actually'' see the Second Doctor regenerate into the Third. Thus it is possible to imagine, as ''[[TV Comic]]'' writers and [[Terrance Dicks]] certainly did, that the Second Doctor survived for an unspecified period of time after ''The War Games''.

The Second Doctor's travels with [[John Who|John]] and [[Gillian Who|Gillian]] are very problematic to place in the Doctor's timeline, as they are inexplicably travelling with him by ''[[The Extortioner (comic story)|The Extortioner]]'', with no explanation given as to how this relate to their travels with the [[First Doctor]]. A possibility emerges, unintentionally, in ''The Nameless City'', where the Doctor has not seen the Master in a long time, but Jamie doesn't know the Doctor's origins, meaning it cannot be set in Season 6b, but must come after ''The Dark Path''. Thus there is a gap between the events of ''The Dark Path'' and ''The Nameless City'', without Jamie, which is perfectly placed by the John and Gillian travels.
The biggest unknowns certainly surround ''[[TV Comic]]'' stories, because of a fundamental continuity error.  There's no way around it, no retcon that can be applied — the ''TV Comic'' writers just got it wrong. At the beginning of his run in ''TV Comic'', the Second Doctor effectively inherits [[John and Gillian]] from the First Doctor.  But then after a few stories with the brats, he puts them in school on [[Zebadee]] and, in the same story, meets up with [[Jamie McCrimmon]] — again.  That is, he knows who Jamie is.  Somehow, Jamie has made his way to 20th century Scotland, but we don't know how.


So time placement of the John and Gillian and Jamie ''TV Comic'' stories is, frankly, impossible.  How could he have already known Jamie at the same time he was travelling with the kids? Were John and Gillian always stowed away on the TARDIS while the Doctor travelled around with Ben, Polly, Jamie, Victoria and Zoe?  There is no great explanation for it.
The stories ''[[Conundrum (novel)|Conundrum]]'' and ''[[The Land of Happy Endings (comic story)|The Land of Happy Endings]]'' hypothesise that these adventures are either stories created by [[Jason (Conundrum)|The Master of the Land of Fiction]] or the Doctor's dreams.


Saying that ''all'' of the ''TV Comic'' stories occur during Season 6b is problematic at best.  ''[[Action in Exile (comic story)|Action in Exile]]'' – one of the first post-Jamie strips — certainly goes out of its way to depict the Doctor as ''newly'' exiled. You can't even really construct some timey-wimey narrative, in which everything prior to ''Action in Exile'' actually happened ''after'' it.  Why?  Attempts to construct a timeline that works for the Second Doctor are always frustrated by the need to accommodate John and Gillian's travels with the ''First'' Doctor.

The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria have their memories wiped of meeting Pavo at the end of the story, allowing for ''The War Games'' to remain Jamie's first hearing of the Time Lords. [[John Dorney]]'s story ''[[Deathworld (TLS audio story)|Deathworld]]'' would further confirm ''The Two Doctors'' occurring in this setting, with Jamie explicitly referencing both the status quo of Victoria waiting for them at the research station from ''The Black Hole'' and events of ''The Two Doctors''.
So what do we do with these wayward scribbles?  '''Say that the Doctor dreamt it all up.''' We've even got a source for that theory. This page lists appearances of the Second Doctor in the order in which he experienced them. This timeline is based on observations of the Doctor Who universe and the events in each of these stories. From these observations we have attempted to build a concise timeline. There are also many gaps between stories.

The layout of this timeline is based in part on the observations on Doctor Who Reference Guide and Doctor Who - The Complete Adventures, Lance Parkin's AHistory and other sources that allow us to make observations, such as DocOhoReviews, Doc Oho's Book Reviews, The History of Doctor Who, The Discontinuity Guide, Clive Banks Database, Whopix, the Big Finish forums, The Whoniverse and the Divergent Universe forums. None of these sources should be used solely as a source or considered a "true" timeline for stories.

Limiting factors[[edit source]]

Companions[[edit source]]

Any story featuring only Ben Jackson and Polly Wright must take place before TV: The Highlanders; any story featuring Jamie McCrimmon must take place after TV: The Highlanders. Any story with Victoria Waterfield must take place after TV: The Evil of the Daleks and before TV: Fury from the Deep. Any story with Zoe Heriot must be set during or after TV: The Wheel in Space and before TV: The War Games.

A lot of stories are often said to occur during Season 6B, a fan-opined spot on the timeline after the Doctor's trial on Gallifrey in The War Games, as the Second Doctor is not seen regenerating into his third incarnation in that serial. Thus it is possible to imagine, as TV Comic writers and Terrance Dicks did, that the Second Doctor survived for an unspecified period of time after The War Games. It was not until 1999 with the publication of PROSE: Players that Season 6B was confirmed as fact instead of pure conjecture.

TV Comics placement[[edit source]]

The Second Doctor's travels with John and Gillian are very problematic to place in the Doctor's timeline, as they are inexplicably travelling with him by The Extortioner, with no explanation given as to how this relate to their travels with the First Doctor. A possibility emerges, unintentionally, in The Nameless City, where the Doctor has not seen the Master in a long time, but Jamie doesn't know the Doctor's origins, meaning it cannot be set in Season 6b, but must come after The Dark Path. Thus there is a gap between the events of The Dark Path and The Nameless City, without Jamie, which is perfectly placed by the John and Gillian travels.

The stories Conundrum and The Land of Happy Endings hypothesise that these adventures are either stories created by The Master of the Land of Fiction or the Doctor's dreams.

The Two Doctors[[edit source]]

A common explanation for the Second Doctor and Jamie's appearance in The Two Doctors is it occurring after The War Games in the theorised Season 6B owing to their older appearance and familiarity with the Time Lords who Jamie did not learn of until The War Games. Terrance Dicks later used his novel World Game to depict events bridging the end of The War Games to the start of The Two Doctors, with the Doctor bargaining with the Time Lords for Jamie to be returned to his side (with his memories altered so he believes they are still travelling with Victoria) and being instructed to visit Dastari.

However Simon Guerrier later used his story, The Black Hole, to offer an alternative setting for The Two Doctors in the middle of Season 5 instead. By this account the Doctor and Jamie are given their mission to visit Dastari by the Time Lord Pavo (in actuality the Monk in disguise) whilst Victoria stays behind with him at a research station. The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria have their memories wiped of meeting Pavo at the end of the story, allowing for The War Games to remain Jamie's first hearing of the Time Lords. John Dorney's story Deathworld would further confirm The Two Doctors occurring in this setting, with Jamie explicitly referencing both the status quo of Victoria waiting for them at the research station from The Black Hole and events of The Two Doctors.

As a result of these differing accounts there are two placements for The Two Doctors on this timeline.

Timeline[[edit source]]

Previous page: First Doctor

A new body[[edit source]]

The Doctor regenerates from his previous incarnation.
Set immediately after The Tenth Planet, with the Doctor adjusting to his new body as he faces the Daleks on Vulcan. Ben and Polly encounter the Daleks for the first time, though they had already been told of them beforehand. While Polly instantly believes him to still be the Doctor, Ben remains more skeptical on his identity, though he is convinced he is still the Doctor when the Daleks identity him.

Whilst leaving Vulcan, the Doctor, Ben and Polly briefly encounter an apparition of a Charley Pollard from an alternate timeline. (AUDIO: The Light at the End)
The Doctor has only just regenerated, and is mourning the loss of his old signet ring, setting this shortly after The Power of the Daleks.
(FLASHBACKS)
Having learned that the Mercury supplies were low when they had "just left" Mercury, the Doctor stocks up the supplies on Kirith. He reflects on the "past few weeks" since his regeneration, during which time tensions in the TARDIS have been noticeably high, with Ben still suspicious of him. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Apocalypse)

New adventures with Ben and Polly[[edit source]]

Ben still doesn't trust the Doctor, to the extend that he continues to think of him as an imposter. However, after their minds connect in a temporary gestalt, Ben senses the First Doctor in the Second Doctor's mind and finally accepts him as still being the Doctor, setting this after Timewyrm: Apocalypse.
The Doctor is still feeling vulnerable following his recent regeneration, though Ben believes he is being self-pitying, as the events of The Power of the Daleks were three weeks ago. While he still struggling to adjust to the Second Doctor, Ben has come to accept that he is still the same man as the First Doctor, setting this after Pluto.
The Doctor's memory is still hazy after his recent regeneration, setting this shortly after The Power of the Daleks, but Ben accepts him as the Doctor, setting this after Pluto.
While spending a few weeks in 1968, Polly thinks of the "new Doctor" as "familiar and strange at the same time", suggesting The Power of the Daleks is still a recent event. However, her and Ben's actions suggest they now trust the Doctor implicitly.
The Doctor tells Polly that he's been in a more "youthful vein" since his "reincarnation" in The Tenth Planet.
The TARDIS crew spend a week on the planet Dorada as brainwashed servants.
No explanations are given for Ben and Polly's absence.
The Doctor mentions that he has been working on several devices since his "reincarnation" that his first incarnation wouldn't have deemed worth his time, suggesting that some time has passed since The Power of the Daleks.
Despite evidence to the contrary in the First Doctor's stories, the Second Doctor claims this is the first time the TARDIS has ever managed a short hop.
When they meet Horatio Nelson, Polly mentions that it's been a "long time" since the TARDIS crew were on Earth, and Ben hasn't seen the sea for "ever so long".
The Doctor creates a temporary sonic device, and resolves to begin work on a permanent version when he gets back to the TARDIS, implied to lead to the eventual creation of a sonic screwdriver. The Doctor meets the Selachians for the first time, having only heard of them previously. Ben and Polly have been travelling in the TARDIS for months, with Polly being 24-years-old. Ben trusts the Doctor, but is still a little uncertain about his motivations.
The Doctor says that he has not been in the United States for some time, setting this before Wonderland, and Ben and Polly are now well adjusted to him.
The Doctor unlocks a door with an apparent sonic screwdriver, setting this after The Murder Game. Summer notes that Ben and Polly are incredibly loyal to the Doctor.
Polly encounters a younger version of herself in 1948.

Joined by Jamie[[edit source]]

During a visit to 1746 Scotland, the Doctor, Ben and Polly meet highlander piper Jamie McCrimmon, who they invite aboard the TARDIS so he can escape the redcoats.
Set immediately after The Highlanders, with Jamie marvelling at the sight of the TARDIS interior before the TARDIS crew arrive at Atlantis. After they flood Atlantis to stop Professor Zaroff destroying Earth, the Doctor sets a course to visit Mars, leading directly into The Moonbase.
Rather than Mars, the TARDIS instead lands on the Moon in 2070, where the crew help prevent the Cybermen from seizing the Moonbase. As they depart, the Doctor uses the TARDIS' time scanner to see their next destination, leading directly into The Macra Terror.
In an alternate timeline created by Rassilon and the Cybermen, the Doctor is partially converted into a Cyberman during the events of The Moonbase: Episode 2.
Polly has her hair cut into a bob-style while staying on an Earth colony in the far future, which the TARDIS crew liberate from the control of the Macra.
Ben and Polly are showing Jamie around the inside of the TARDIS, setting this early in his travels, and they themselves have only been travelling with the Doctor for a few weeks.
The Doctor warns Jamie what he should do if he ever encounters the Pyromeths, which is implied to be a warning he gives to recent additions to the TARDIS, setting this shortly after The Highlanders.
While Polly is described as having long hair, Jamie is still having difficulty acclimatising to time travel, and Ben and Polly bring him up to date with the history of the United Kingdom after his own time, setting this early in his travels. However, he is starting to consider the TARDIS home and has explored the ship's corridors, setting this after Something at the Door. Ben and Polly appear to return to London for the first time since The War Machines, albeit in a time long before their own.
The TARDIS has "finally" found its way back to England, suggesting that the TARDIS crew have not been there for a while, and that the story is set before The Morton Legacy. Jamie learns about trains and World Wars for the first time, setting this before Resistance and The Forsaken, respectively.
Set between The Macra Terror and The Faceless Ones.[1] The Doctor has still only recently regenerated. Polly doesn't know about the TARDIS' translation circuit, and also doesn't appear to have much experience travelling to Earth's recent history. The Doctor tries to tell Jamie what a train is, but he seems to know already, setting this after The Mouthless Dead.
Jamie is apparently still new to the TARDIS, constantly asking Ben about a range of modern terms, with Ben himself saying that he hasn't known Jamie that long, setting this not long after The Highlanders.

Final adventures with Ben and Polly[[edit source]]

The TARDIS crew spend several months in the Roman Republic of 71 BCE, from with their stay starting in Winter and ending in Autumn.
Jamie is familiar with cars, and recalls his first encounter with them as if it were some time ago.
Ben refers to his encounter with the Milice during the events of Resistance. Jamie meets the Selachians for the first time.
Polly recalls the events of Resistance, while Jamie refers to the events of the The Selachian Gambit.
The Doctor begins to teach his companions how to pilot the TARDIS, but they end up fighting the Yes Men in New Houston when he takes back control. Jamie is described as being "perhaps a year older" than the 22-year-old Jamie fighting at the Battle of Culloden in the Yes Men simulation, suggesting that around a year has passed since The Highlanders.
Set shortly after The Yes Men, with Jamie, Ben and Polly discussing their recent failed piloting to New Houston and being upset with the Doctor for not letting them pilot the TARDIS again. Jamie learns of the TARDIS translation circuitry for the first time.
Polly is used to seeing history, but not that of London, despite her previous visits in The Feast and The Roundheads.
While Polly is described as having short hair, the Doctor recalls the events of The Yes Men, Jamie appears familiar with time travel and the TARDIS crew is a close-knitted unit.

The Human Factor incident[[edit source]]

Polly's hair has regrown to its old length, setting this long after The Macra Terror. Arriving at Gatwick Airport, the Doctor foils a Chemeleon plot to replace humanity. When they realise they have landed on the same day they left in the TARDIS, Ben and Polly decide to remain behind. After they say their goodbyes, the Doctor and Jamie realise that the TARDIS has been stolen, leading directly into The Evil of the Daleks. In the novelisation, the Doctor uses a sonic screwdriver.
The Doctor and Jamie trace the TARDIS to Edward Waterfield, a man who time travelled from 1866 under the orders of the Daleks to trap the Doctor in return for the safety of his daughter, Victoria. The Dalek Emperor forces the Doctor to inject them with the Human Factor so they can isolate the Dalek Factor, but the Doctor's Humanised Daleks begin a battle with the Emperor's Daleks on Skaro, seemingly resulting in "the final end" of the Daleks. Waterfield dies protecting the Doctor from the Daleks, but not before making him promise to look after his daughter, causing the Doctor to take on Victoria as a companion to honour his promise.
(PROLOGUE)
As they leave Skaro, the Doctor and Jamie introduce Victoria to the TARDIS, and the Doctor tells her that he is "around 450-years-old" in Earth terms. As he takes her to find a change of clothes, Jamie tells the Doctor to try "a smooth take off" to keep from frightening Victoria. (TV: The Tomb of the Cybermen)
While Victoria sleeps in the TARDIS, the Doctor and Jamie take a quick trip to Tersimmon, where they encounter the Daleks again, despite believing to have just seen their "final end", with the Doctor still troubled by his part in the apparent genocide, setting this almost immediately after The Evil of the Daleks.

Early adventures with Victoria[[edit source]]

For her first trip, the Doctor and Jamie end up taking Victoria to Telos, just in time to stop the Brotherhood of Logicians from freeing the CyberTelosians from their cyber-tombs.
Set in an aborted timeline during The Tomb of the Cybermen: Episode 1, when Jamie and Peter Haydon entered the weapons testing room.
While authorial intent places this between The Web of Fear and Fury from the Deep [2], Victoria is still very new to seeing other time periods. The Doctor and Jamie have been sent by Time Lords to see Joinson Dastari at Space Station Camera, where the Doctor is kidnapped by Sontarans in an Androgum plot to obtain time travel, and has to be rescued from their experiments by the Sixth Doctor and Peri Brown.

Once Salamander is exposed as a criminal, however, he uses his likeness of the Doctor to infiltrate the TARDIS, only to be sucked out into the Time Vortex. Jamie and Victoria see a helicopter for the first time.
Set immediately after The Enemy of the World, with the Doctor and Jamie managing to close the TARDIS doors to spare themselves from Salamander's fate. After the crew clean themselves up, the TARDIS is ensnared by the Great Intelligence and forced to land in the London Underground, where the Doctor becomes separated from Jamie and Victoria. As he maneuvers through the Underground, the Doctor has his first official meeting with Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, and is quickly reunited with Jamie, Victoria and Professor Travers, and joins with them and Travers' daughter, Anne, to combat the Intelligence in the London Event.

Jamie is still melancholy about Victoria's departure. The Station's astrometricist, Zoe Heriot, hides aboard the TARDIS when it departs and joins the Doctor and Jamie in their travels. The Doctor begins showing Zoe a mental projection of the events of The Evil of the Daleks.
Interlinked between The Wheel in Space and Fear of the Daleks, with Jamie watching the Doctor showing Zoe the mental projection of the events of The Evil of the Daleks. He remembers the events of The Faceless Ones as happening "months" ago, and learns about the TARDIS translation circuits for the first time. Ever since Victoria's departure in Fury from the Deep, Jamie has been thinking about leaving the Doctor, but ultimately decides to stay.
Zoe has just finished watching the mental projection of The Evil of the Daleks, setting this immediately after The Wheel in Space. The Doctor and Zoe are then forced to project their minds as part of assassination attempt by Atrika, setting this immediately before The Dominators, where the Doctor was exhausted from projecting the mental images.
The Doctor is beginning to gain control of the TARDIS, taking it to Dulkis so he, Jamie and Zoe can have a holiday. However, they instead find themselves thwarting an invasion by the Dominators and their Quark slaves on the Island of Death. As they celebrate beating the Dominators, however, a volcano on the island erupts and the lava rapidly approaches the TARDIS.

He agrees to their terms, but demands they allow him to make sure the soldiers from the War Games were sent home. (PROSE: World Game)
Set during World Game, with the Doctor being sent to World War II to check that his friends from the War Games have been safely sent home.
After returning from the events of Players, the Doctor is assigned his first official mission for the CIA, with Serena acting as his companion and having a TARDIS with a working chameleon circuit assigned to him when he is sent to investigate interference in Napoléon Bonaparte's history. Serena is killed during the mission, and the Doctor travels to 1816 to ensure that the interference hasn't caused serious disruption to the timeline. Rather than immediately returning to Gallifrey, the Doctor decides to remain in 1816 for a holiday.

Return trip to Gallifrey[[edit source]]

The Doctor's hair is starting to go grey, and he is travelling alone.
The Doctor visits the Brigadier at a UNIT reunion, though he claims to be "bending" the Laws of Time to do so, where they are kidnapped by Borusa to partake in the Game of Rassilon. The Doctor remembers Jamie and Zoe's memories being wiped during The War Games, and has flecks of grey in his hair. Joining forces with his first, third and fifth incarnations, the Second Doctor watches as Rassilon deals with Borusa, and he and the Brigadier then leave Gallifrey in the TARDIS.

Recently exiled, the Doctor takes up residence in the Carlton Grange Hotel in London during the 1960s.
The general public have become aware of the Doctor's presence at the Carlton Grange Hotel.
The Doctor is invited to give a lecture at a university due to his growing notoriety. He claims to be 500-years-old, and spends at least a week as a captive of the Brotherhood while they try to extract buried Aztec gold from Mexico.
The Doctor spends three days in the Arizona desert helping the Quotrons repair their ship with Specs Crabshaw.
Ensnared by a Time Lord trap after appearing on the Explain My Mystery gameshow, the Doctor is forced to regenerate into his next incarnation by scarecrows animated by the Time Lords.

Snatched from his timeline[[edit source]]

The Doctor is plucked from his time stream a "quantum of a second" before he is forced to regenerate and coerced into working for the Celestial Intervention Agency instead of being exiled, by a CIA representative called Raven.
Set directly after The Final Beginning. The Doctor takes his "first mission" for the CIA with his TARDIS returned to him, though he is still adjusting to not having Jamie and Zoe with him. His sonic screwdriver is destroyed, but he resolves to build a new one with an improved design. Raven makes plans to reunite the Doctor with an old friend and sends a new set of coordinates to his TARDIS, leading into Jamie.
Raven reunites the Doctor with an older Jamie, thirty years after they parted ways in The War Games. The Doctor deals with fallout from the erasement of Jamie's memories by the Time Lords, which awakened a Zyton mind parasite within him. Jamie rejoins him in the the TARDIS once hid memories are fixed.
(FLASHBACK)
The Doctor and Jamie prevent the assassination of the Veltraxian ambassador and disable a temporal bomb on a moving train. (AUDIO: The Green Man)
According to the BTS extras, Jamie is intended to be in his forties during this adventure.
In the week following their saving of the Veltraxian ambassador, Raven sends the Doctor and Jamie to Florestus Prime when they demand a holiday. The Doctor recalls the events of The Annihilators as one of the many missions Raven has sent him and Jamie on in the past week, and Jamie is unfamiliar with the concept of regeneration.
The Doctor has rebuilt his sonic screwdriver, and uses it to to send Raven back to the High Council with the Shroud weapon she had unleashed on Ninevah, believing that her punishment will free him and Jamie from her services. The Doctor attempts to pilot the TARDIS freely now that Raven is out of the picture, but something goes wrong.

The Doctor takes on Tarlos as a companion after his visit to Triketha, and they have many adventures together before the Doctor apparently returns him home. The Doctor's memories of Tarlos are then erased by the Time Lords. (AUDIO: Colony of Fear)

Since Jamie is not described as an adult, and considering that The Two Doctors follows directly on from World Game, with no plausible gap in between, this must occur during The Black Hole. However, Jamie is also familiar with the sonic screwdriver, suggesting a setting after Fury from the Deep, assuming he had not encountered it before having his memories wiped in The Black Hole.
